The Trachycarpus is a real sun worshipper and needs that light intensity to stay healthy and good-looking. It does make it a thirsty plant! Over the summer months it is worth giving a little extra plant food to support its growth and development. Use a special palm food and stick to the recommended amount. Those fan-shaped leaves and that robust character are what make this palm so well loved. The Trachycarpus is hardy and survives temperatures down to -18 degrees Celsius, which makes it perfect for a garden in our climate.
How much water does the Trachycarpus - 160cm need?
As we said, the Trachycarpus is thirsty and needs water daily, especially over the summer months. The soil certainly must not dry out then. Do take care not to give too much water, because that turns the leaf tips brown or black. Prune the affected leaves away if that happens and adjust how much you give. In winter the soil can be a little drier between waterings, since the plant uses less water then too.
How much light does the Trachycarpus - 160cm need?
The ideal place for this palm is a spot with as much sunlight as possible. Both indoors and outdoors you can happily put it in direct sun. Do make sure the plant is sheltered from strong wind and draughts, because those damage the leaves. Despite its tropical looks, the Trachycarpus copes with cold temperatures and is a real survivor in winter.
