Hardy Trachycarpus Fortunei Palms

Trachycarpus Fortunei, also known as the Chinese Fan Palm or Hemp Palm, is a beautiful palm species that excels in winter hardiness. This tropical-looking plant can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. This makes it ideal for the Dutch climate. What makes this palm truly unique is that it remains beautiful all year round. Whether summer or winter, Trachycarpus always provides an exotic atmosphere in your garden.

How large will a Fan Palm grow?

The size of a Trachycarpus Fortunei can vary considerably. Therefore, when purchasing it is useful to look carefully at the size that suits your garden or balcony. There are compact specimens such as the Trachycarpus of 100cm, as well as impressive large palms of 270cm. For those looking for something in between, there is, for example, the wonderful Trachycarpus of 170cm. Thanks to this wide choice, there is always a palm that fits your space perfectly.

Where does Trachycarpus Fortunei come from?

Trachycarpus Fortunei originates in the mountainous regions of Central and East Asia, particularly in countries such as China, Nepal and northern India. So despite its tropical appearance, this palm grows naturally in cooler climates. This also explains why it is so resistant to low temperatures and adapts well to the European climate.

How do you care for a Trachycarpus Fortunei?

Caring for a Trachycarpus Fortunei is not difficult, but it is important to know some basic tips. Proper care will ensure that the palm remains beautiful and grows healthily for many years.

Care Tip: Make sure the soil is well-drained and preferably use a pot with drainage holes. This prevents root rot and allows excess water to drain easily.

Watering the Hemp Palm

A Trachycarpus likes slightly moist soil, but not wet feet. Water regularly in summer, especially during warm periods. In winter, you may limit watering. Preferably use a pot with good drainage to ensure proper water runoff.

The ideal habitat for Trachycarpus Fortunei

Trachycarpus is a true lover of sunlight. The palm stays healthiest in a place with sufficient light. Both indoors and outdoors it can be placed in full sun. Although Trachycarpus Fortunei is hardy, it is important to protect it in very severe winters with temperatures below -10 degrees Celsius. This can be done by moving it indoors or by covering it with a special winter cover.

What to do about discolored leaves?

If the leaves of your Trachycarpus Fortunei are discolored, there could be several reasons for this. First, check that the plant is getting enough water and that the soil is well-drained. A location that is too wet or too dry can cause stress to the plant. Nutritional deficiencies can also contribute to discoloration. Therefore, fertilize the plant according to the recommendations on the package. Sometimes discoloration is quite natural; old leaves at the bottom die while the palm forms new leaves at the top.

But what if many leaves are already discolored? In that case, it is important to intervene. Remove completely brown or withered leaves with sharp, clean pruning shears. Leave half-green or still partially healthy leaves, as these can still support the palm. Check the root ball for rot or desiccation, repot the palm in fresh potting soil with good drainage if necessary, and consider repotting temporarily liquid plant food give for a quick recovery. Place the palm in a bright, sheltered spot where it can recover well.

Feeding and fertilizing Trachycarpus Fortunei

It is not a must to plant food give to the Trachycarpus, but it can help the plant grow faster. We recommend fertilizing with palm fertilizer only in spring. During spring and summer, give fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks. This supports the development of new leaves and keeps the palm strong. Be sure not to fertilize more than recommended. In winter, nutrients from fertilizer cannot be absorbed. Too much unused nutrients can damage the roots, as fertilizer is highly acidic. So don't fertilize at this time!

Pruning the Trachycarpus Fortunei

Prune only the leaves of the Trachycarpus Fortunei that are really dead or badly damaged. You can recognize this by completely brown or withered leaves. Evergreen leaves are better left as they still provide nutrients to the plant. Prune preferably in the spring, so that the plant can recover well.

Diseases and pests in the Fan Palm

Although Trachycarpus is generally hardy, sometimes pests such as mealybugs can occur. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly. If infested, you can treat them with organic pesticides or a mild soap solution. Read more about this pest in our blog about mealybug.
