The Trachycarpus is a striking outdoor plant that originally grows high up in the Himalayas. Its Dutch nicknames are the Henneppalm and the Handpalm, and it belongs to the Aracaceae family. Yes, the Trachycarpus Fortunei (Chinese windmill palm) is one of the hardiest palms available. When planted in the ground, it withstands temperatures down to around -15°C. During prolonged severe frost or biting wind, it's wise to loosely tie the crown together and wrap it in fleece (never use plastic). Is your palm in a pot? Then also protect the pot itself with bubble wrap, so the root ball doesn't freeze through completely.

How much water does the Trachycarpus Fortunei need?

During the growing season (March to October), water the Trachycarpus Fortunei regularly, as soon as the top layer of soil feels dry. The core of the soil can stay lightly moist, but avoid standing water: soggy roots quickly lead to root rot. In winter, the palm needs much less water.
