Tropical Kentia Palm for your home

If there is one plant synonymous with the tropics, it is the beautiful Kentia Palm. The Kentia is also called the Howea Forsteriana and originates from Lord Howe Island, located between Australia and New Zealand.
This green friend is not only a picture to look at, but also incredibly easy to look after. Forgotten to water once? No problem, the Kentia palm does not do drama. Besides, the Howea Forsteriana also falls under the category of animal-friendly plants and doesn't mind getting a little less light. A win-win situation!

Is the Kentia Palm poisonous?

The Kentia palm is known as a non-toxic houseplant. This means it is fine with children and pets. Of course, it is still not meant to be consumed or incorporated into food. Keep in mind that although the plant itself is considered non-toxic, the potting soil and fertilisers can be potentially harmful.

Air purification of the Kentia

The Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) is known for its ability to purify the air. Like many other houseplants, the Kentia palm has the ability to absorb pollutants from the air and convert them into oxygen.

The best care for the Kentia Palm

The Howea Forsteriana is not difficult to care for. The plant is quickly satisfied and does not require much attention. However, it is important to be aware of the right location and watering.

Watering the Kentia Palm

The soil of the Howea Forsteriana should always remain slightly moist. We recommend watering the plant once a week. Before each watering, feel deeply into the potting soil with two fingers. Is it still wet from the previous week? Then it's better to wait and let the plant digest it first. Make sure there is good drainage in the pot and use a moisture meter when repotting.

The right location

The Kentia prefers bright, indirect light. Too little light can lead to slower growth and too much light can burn the leaves. So it is important to choose the right spot. Make sure the Howea Forsteriana has enough room to grow. Regular repotting may be necessary as the plant grows bigger.

Feeding the Kentia

The Kentia palm needs extra nutrients through plant food to stay healthy and beautiful. Give the plant some normal houseplant food once a month from March to September. In the months September to March give the plant some food once every two months.

Repotting and pruning the Kentia palm

Repot a Kentia palm preferably every few years or when you notice the roots growing out of the pot. Spring is a good time to do this because then the plant has enough time to recover. Repot your Howea Forsteriana properly by using a waterproof inner sleeve, filler rat and a moisture meter.
Pruning the Kentia is not a daily operation but is necessary once in a while. Cut off dead or damaged leaves with a clean knife or prune with sharp scissors. Even if the plant grows out of proportion, you can cut it to the desired shape.

Kentia diseases

Unfortunately, this lovely houseplant is also susceptible to diseases and pests. It is important to recognise this in time so you can act quickly. Often, the plant can then be treated well and effectively.

  • Aphids: Aphids suck the sap out of the plant via the leaves. Rinse the affected leaves well with water or use an insecticide soap.
  • Root rot: Root rot is caused by excess water combined with poor drainage. Avoid overwatering and make sure you measure properly using a moisture meter.
  • Mealybugs: Mealybugs are sticky, white fluffy insects that sit on the leaves. You can simply wipe the mealybugs away with a wet cloth. Should this not help, you can touch them with some spirit.
