Sturdy Ficus Lyrata houseplants

With its large leaves, the Ficus Lyrata, or fiddle leaf plant, is a real eye-catcher. The leaves of this plant used to be used for making cigars, which is why Ficus Lyrata is also known as the tobacco plant. This summer topper originates from Africa and its sturdy trunk gives it a tough appearance.

Ficus Lyrata is available on a stem, with no leaves on the lower part of the stem, just like a tree. You can also buy this green houseplant as a shrub. Ficus Lyrata is a real eye-catcher in your home, because it is extremely large: most of them in our webshop are 180 to 200 cm tall!

Ficus Lyrata care

Ficus Lyrata is an easy houseplant that grows quickly and needs little care. In nature, it is mostly in sunlight, so this cool plant prefers as much daylight as possible in your home. It can tolerate sunlight just fine. To enjoy your plant as long as possible, it is important that you know how to take care of it properly. Read more about the care of Ficus Lyrata below.

Watering a Ficus Lyrata

The soil of Ficus Lyrata should always be slightly moist. Give the plant a little water regularly. On average, watering once a week is sufficient in spring and summer, but large plants may require watering twice a week. Do not water Ficus Lyrata until the potting soil feels a little drier. You can easily check this by feeling in the soil with your fingers each time. It is important not to give too much water, as this can stick to the roots and cause root rot. So make sure no water remains at the bottom of the pot.

The ideal location for a Ficus Lyrata

A place with as much light as possible is the ideal location for a Ficus Lyrata. The plant loves sunlight; it is even used to it by nature. If there is a shortage of light, Ficus will drop its leaves and find it difficult to renew them. To avoid bare Ficus Lyrata, it is therefore important that Ficus gets enough light.

Repot Ficus Lyrata

Repot Ficus Lyrata when it gets too big for its growing pot. Choose a pot that is 20% bigger than the previous one. This way, the roots have enough room to grow bigger. Repot Ficus preferably in spring, so that any damaged roots can recover faster. Repotting is best done every 2 years to let the plant grow optimally.

Pruning a Ficus Lyrata

Pruning a Ficus Lyrata is not a weekly operation. This is because the plant repels old leaves itself. Do you see leaves you do not like? Then you can simply cut them off. When doing so, cut just after the leaf near the armpit. In time, new leaves will grow here. Be careful, because the juice that is released is poisonous and can irritate the skin.

Feeding Ficus Lyrata

In the first two months after purchase, Ficus Lyrata does not need any nutrition. During that time, the potting soil still contains enough nutrition. After those two months, you can give Ficus Lyrata plant food in the spring and summer months. For this, you can use normal indoor plant food. This is not necessary in the winter months; during this period, Ficus, like many other plants, is in a resting mode. Before use, always read on the packaging how much fertiliser to put in the water so that you do not give too much.

Ficus Lyrata diseases

Does your Ficus Lyrata suffer from a pest or vermin? Annoying, of course! Unfortunately, houseplants are always susceptible. However, it is important that you do something about it quickly to keep your plant healthy. Of course, you can always send us a message if you are not sure. We will be happy to help you find the best solution for your Ficus.

Is Ficus Lyrata poisonous?

Yes, unfortunately the sap coming from Ficus Lyrata is toxic and irritating to the skin. Ingesting the leaves can also be dangerous. So be careful with pets and small children. Would you rather play it safe? Then check out our animal-friendly houseplants.
