Pets and houseplants: A safe combination

Pets often have a fascination with houseplants. However, it can be a challenge to have plants in the house that are safe for curious four-legged friends. Many houseplants are (slightly) toxic to pets, which can lead to health problems if they nibble on the leaves. Fortunately, you don't have to choose between houseplants and your pets. At Green Bubble, we have a carefully curated selection of animal-friendly houseplants that both beautify your interior and are safe for your pets and children.

What is an animal-friendly houseplant?

If you have a baby or pets, it is important to pay close attention to the safety of your houseplants. This is because some plants can be toxic and cause reactions such as skin irritation. It is not always easy to distinguish toxic from animal-friendly plants. Therefore, it is crucial to inform yourself properly about which plants are safe. At Green Bubble, we are happy to help you find the best choice for a safe and beautiful green environment.

Animal-friendly houseplants: Our favourites

Below is a selection of animal-friendly houseplants, perfect for your interior:
Kentia Palm The Kentia palm is a large, attractive palm that thrives in a variety of spaces such as the office, living room or bedroom. This plant requires little care, except a slightly moist soil. Thanks to its air-purifying properties, it creates a pleasant atmosphere and increases your productivity.
Areca Palm Also known as the golden palm, the Areca palm grows to an impressive height of 210 cm. This palm requires little care and, in return for your love and attention, provides fresh, clean air. Ideal for any room with normal daylight.
Pancake plant The Pancake plant, officially known as Pilea Peperomioides, has long stems and round leaves resembling pancakes. It likes indirect light and sporadic watering. Although not the best air purifier, it adds a fresh touch to your home.
Banana plant The Banana plant (Musa) with its large leaves brings a tropical feel to your home. This plant is animal-friendly and has an air-purifying function. Make sure its roots are not under water and give it a warm, sunny spot.
Orchid Orchids are easy to care for and can flower several times a year. They are non-toxic to pets and children. Make sure not to overwater the plant, preferably with a few ice cubes a week, and put it in normal daylight.
Calathea This plant comes from the tropical rainforests and has a beautiful leaf pattern. The Calathea likes a little moisture and moderate light. Do not put it in direct sunlight or in too dark a space to ensure healthy growth.
Grass Lily The Grass Lily (Chlorophytum Comosum) is not only animal-friendly but also air-purifying. Be careful not to let your pets eat too much of the leaves as it can cause nausea. The plant requires weekly watering and a sunny spot, but not in direct sunlight.

Why choose animal-friendly houseplants?

If you love houseplants but are worried about the safety of your pets, we have good news. There are plenty of animal-friendly options that make a wonderful addition to your home without risk to your four-legged friends. Many of these plants also have air-purifying properties, making them not only safe but also contributing to a healthier living environment.

What are air-purifying houseplants?

Air-purifying houseplants are able to filter harmful substances such as benzene and ammonia from the air. NASA has researched the effectiveness of plants in cleaning air, and some plants are particularly good at improving air quality and increasing humidity. For those with less green fingers, there are also air-purifying plants that require little care, such as the Sansevieria.
