Magnificent Yucca Rostrata plants

Meet the Yucca Rostrata, also known as the Palm Lily. With its unique shape, this exotic beauty is an outdoor plant you won't easily overlook. It is also suitable as an indoor plant. The lush crown, filled with stately and bright green leaves that can grow up to 60 cm long, makes the Yucca Rostrata an absolute eye-catcher in your garden.

Where does the Yucca originate from?

Originally, the Yucca comes from regions of northeastern Mexico, the vast West Texas and the mysterious Chihuahua Desert. So the Yucca Rostrata is sure to bring a touch of exotic warmth to your Dutch garden.

Is the Yucca poisonous?

Unfortunately, the plant is poisonous if ingested. The plant contains chemicals called saponins, which can cause gastrointestinal problems if swallowed. Symptoms of poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. It is important to keep this in mind if you have small children or curious pets.

Caring for the Yucca plant

Taking care of the Yucca is a piece of cake. This cool garden plant is actually not that difficult at all. Drooping leaves are part of the growth process of this plant. The choice is yours whether to let them droop for a lush effect or prune them instead. Make sure you are aware of the right care to enjoy your Palm Lily for as long as possible.

Watering the Yucca

The Yucca Rostrata originates from very dry areas, including the desert, and is therefore not a fan of too much water. It is a slow grower and drinks slowly. Check the soil of your Yucca Rostrata regularly and make sure it does not dry out completely. Test the amount of water and frequency in the beginning and you will see how much your plant needs.

The perfect location for the Palm Lily

The Yucca Rostrata is a real sun lover. We advise you not to move the Yucca Rostrata too often. This is because the plant needs to get used to a new spot and this can disrupt its development and growth. The Yucca Rostrata is hardy to -7 degrees Celsius. When the temperature drops below this, we recommend wrapping the plant in a tree cover or bubble wrap.

Feeding the Yucca

In the summer months, the Yucca can be fed once every two months; in winter, this is not necessary. Then the plant is in a dormant state and this can affect its growth. Preferably use Mediterranean plant food andnever exceed the recommended amount.

Repotting the Yucca

When repotting your Palm Lily, choose a planter which is at least 20% larger than the root ball. This way, the Yucca Rostrata can develop further and the roots will have enough new space to grow further and stronger. Repotting the Yucca Rostrata is best done in spring. Then any damaged roots can recover properly in the sunny period.

Palm lily diseases and pests

Just like any other plant, the Yucca can be affected by pests. With outdoor plants, we often talk about lice. By keeping a close eye on your plants, you ensure that you catch them in time and that almost any pest can be controlled quickly and easily. Often, spraying the leaves already helps prevent unwanted insects. If not, you can use pesticides.
