How to choose the perfect Sansevieria

Where does the snake plant come from?
The Sansevieria originally comes from tropical West Africa, in particular from countries such as Nigeria and Congo. Thanks to its knack for adapting to all sorts of conditions, the plant is loved worldwide and has long been a fixture in many Dutch homes.
Is the Sansevieria a succulent?
Officially, the Sansevieria is not a succulent. The snake plant does share characteristics with succulents: it stores water and copes well with drought, but it belongs to the Asparagaceae family and not to the succulents. Even so, it is often sold as a succulent because it is just as easy to look after.
How big does a snake plant grow?
The eventual size of a Sansevieria depends on the variety as well as on the pot it stands in. Compact varieties stay modest, between 30 and 50 cm tall, ideal for a desk, a shelf or a windowsill. Larger varieties can grow up to 150 cm and instantly draw the eye in your home. The height is partly determined by the pot size: the roomier the nursery pot, the bigger the root ball can become, and so the bigger the plant. Whatever size you go for, a Sansevieria grows slowly and keeps its shape beautifully for years.
Is the Sansevieria toxic?
The snake plant is mildly toxic when eaten. Touching it does no harm, but eating the leaves can lead to stomach or intestinal complaints. Do you have pets or small children? Then it is wise to choose a pet-friendly plant instead.
Can a snake plant flower?
A Sansevieria can flower, but in practice this rarely happens. Only in the most ideal conditions, and usually in its natural habitat, will the Sansevieria produce small, fragrant flowers on a long stem. These are normally white or light green.

Snake plant care tips in brief
The Sansevieria is one of the easiest houseplants you will ever find. Even so, there are a few basic rules that keep your plant healthy for years:
- Water: let the soil dry out completely between waterings. The snake plant stores water in its leaves. Too much water is its greatest enemy. Watering once every 2 to 3 weeks is plenty!
- Light: suitable for full sun as well as shade. The leaf colour adapts to the amount of light.
- Repotting: once every 2 years, preferably in spring.
- Plant food: only in the growing season (spring/summer) and in small amounts.

Is the Sansevieria suitable for dark spots?
The snake plant is happy in darker spots too and tolerates shade well. It adapts to the light conditions. Do bear in mind that in shade the leaves often take on a darker colour.
What to do about diseases or pests?
It is important to check your plant regularly for pests. If an infestation does appear, act quickly. The Sansevieria is not especially susceptible, but spider mites or thrips can unfortunately turn up now and then. Use organic pest control or get in touch with us for advice.
