- Choose the desired height: Sansevierias come in compact species of 25cm to larger sizes of 90cm
- View leaf color: go for classic green, silver gray, or yellow borders.
- Choose a form that suits you: erect, twisted or with colorful tips.
Where does the Woman's Tongue come from?
The Sansevieria is native to tropical West Africa, particularly countries such as Nigeria and Congo. Because of its ability to adapt to different conditions, the plant is loved worldwide and is now a fixture in many Dutch households.
Is the Sansevieria a succulent?
Officially, the Sansevieria is not a succulent. The Woman's tongue is similar to succulents in its characteristics: it stores water and can withstand drought well, but belongs to the Asparagaceae-family and not to the Succulents. Nevertheless, it is often referred to as succulent sold for its comparable ease of care.
How big does a Woman's tongue grow?
The final size of a Sansevieria depends on the species as well as the pot in which it is placed. Compact varieties remain modest, with a height between 30 and 50 cm, ideal for on a desk, shelf or windowsill. Larger varieties can grow up to 150 cm and immediately draw attention to your interior. The height is partly determined by the pot size: the larger the growing pot, the larger the root ball can grow, and thus the plant. Whatever your size, a Sansevieria grows slowly and keeps its shape for years.

The Female Tongue is mildly poisonous when ingested. Although touching is not harmful, eating the leaves can cause stomach or intestinal discomfort. Do you have pets or small children? If so, it is advisable to use for a animal-friendly plant choose.
Can a Woman's Tongue bloom?
A Sansevieria can flower, but this is not common in practice. Only under the most ideal conditions and usually in its natural habitat can the Sansevieria bloom with small, fragrant flowers on a long stem. These are usually white or light green in color.

Female tongue care tips in brief
The Sansevieria is one of the easiest houseplants you can find. Still, there are a few basic rules that will keep your plant healthy for years to come:
- Water: Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. The Female Tongue stores water in its leaves. Too much water is its worst enemy. Watering once every 2 to 3 weeks is sufficient!
- Light: suitable for both full sun and shade. Leaf color adapts to the amount of light.
- Repot: once every 2 years, preferably in spring.
- Nutrition: only in the growing season (spring/summer) and in limited quantity.
On the Sansevieria care page you'll find all our tips for caring for this timeless houseplant.
Is the Sansevieria suitable for dark places?
The Female Tongue is also suitable for dark spots and tolerates shade well. It adapts to light conditions. Note, however, that in shade the color of the leaves often darkens.
What to do in case of diseases or pests?
It is important to regularly check the plant carefully for pests. In case of an infestation, it is important to take action quickly. The Sansevieria is not easily susceptible, but spider mites or thrips can unfortunately sometimes occur. Use biological pesticides or contact us for advice.
