The Chamaerops Humilis

The impressive, tropical Chamaerops humilis, also known as the Dwarf Palm, is the only palm species with European roots. This plant grows naturally mostly around the Mediterranean Sea. It owes its nickname "Dwarf Palm" to its relatively compact size compared to other, often much larger palm species.

The Chamaerops humilis is suitable both as a indoor and outdoor plant. Don't be surprised by kinked or bent leaves; in fact, this is a typical feature of this palm and contributes to its lush appearance. Because it often faces strong coastal winds in its natural habitat, the palm has adapted by having its leaves snapped. This prevents entire branches from breaking off in strong gusts of wind. A clever and natural survival strategy!

Is the Chamaerops Humilis hardy?

The Chamaerops Humilis is hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to about -12°C. This makes it well suited for the Dutch garden, provided it is in a sheltered spot. If the temperature is lower than that, it is wise to protect the plant with a special fleece or tree cover. This will prevent frost damage and help your Dwarf Palm to survive the winter healthily.

How fast does a Chamaerops Humilis grow?

The Chamaerops Humilis is a relatively slow grower. On average, this Dwarf Palm grows about 10 to 20 inches per year, depending on conditions such as light, temperature and care. Because of its slow growth, it maintains its compact and distinctive appearance, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.

How do I care for a Chamaerops Humilis?

The Chamaerops Humilis is a relatively easy plant to care for, making it suitable for beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts alike. With the right basics, this robust palm will stay healthy and beautiful for a long time.

The location of the Dwarf Palm

The Chamaerops Humilis, as mentioned, originates from a sunny area around the Mediterranean Sea, where the sun shines just a bit more often than in the Netherlands. This palm can therefore easily withstand sunlight and prefers a place in full sun. Place the plant in a sunny spot and make sure that the soil is always slightly moist, especially in summer. Watering the Chamaerops Humilis

Always keep the soil of the Chamaerops Humilis slightly moist. Especially in summer, with hot days and lots of sun, the plant needs water more often. On hot days, you can even water several times a week. Check the moisture by feeling a little deeper into the soil with your fingers. Is the soil dry after a few days? Then it's time for water. Does the soil still feel moist? Then wait a little longer.

Do you place the plant in a decorative pot make sure the pot has drainage holes. This allows excess (rain) water to drain away and prevents the roots from staying wet for too long, which can cause root rot. Root rot is difficult to repair and thus better to prevent.

Discoloration and snapped leaves

Snapped leaves and small holes are normal for the Chamaerops Humilis and no cause for concern. As previously mentioned, this palm protects itself by snapping its leaves, so the wind slides past the leaves without breaking stems.

The palm grows from the center: new leaves appear as a small fan and unfold as they grow. The lower, oldest leaves eventually turn yellow or brown and are shed. This is a natural growth process. Prune these leaves quickly to avoid wasting energy that the healthy leaves could make better use of. To do this, use sharp scissors or a knife and cut as close to the stem as possible.

Repotting the Dwarf Palm

We recommend repotting the Chamaerops Humilis every two years. The palm does not need to be potted immediately upon delivery, as it can remain in its cultivation pot for another two years to allow its roots to grow bigger and stronger. If you do decide to repot your Chamaerops Humilis, this should be done correctly. When you put the plant outside, it is important that there are drainage holes in the ornamental pot so that excess water can drain away properly. It is also good to use hydro grains or stones.

When using the Chamaerops Humilis as a houseplant, you should repot the plant using a waterproof inner sleeve, vulcastrat and a water meter.

Is the Chamaerops Humilis poisonous?

Fortunately, the Chamaerops Humilis is not a poisonous plant. This makes the Chamaerops Humilis a safe choice when you have children or pets. You can therefore confidently place the Chamaerops Humilis anywhere. Curious about even more options? Check out our collection pet- and child-friendly houseplants.
