Giving the Trachycarpus a little extra plant food over the summer months pays off, because it supports its growth and development. Use a palm food and never give more than the recommended amount.

How much water does the Trachycarpus - 85cm need?

As we said, the Trachycarpus is a thirsty garden plant and it needs a drop of water every day, especially over the summer months. The soil must not dry out in summer, but do watch out for too much water: overwatering turns the leaf tips brown or black. If that happens you can prune those leaves away, and then cut back a little on the amount you give. In the winter months the soil can dry out a bit between waterings. With less sunlight reaching the plant in winter, it uses less water too.

Is the Trachycarpus Fortunei hardy?

Yes, the Trachycarpus Fortunei (Chinese windmill palm) is one of the hardiest palms available. When planted in the ground, it withstands temperatures down to around -15°C. During prolonged severe frost or biting wind, it's wise to loosely tie the crown together and wrap it in fleece (never use plastic). Is your palm in a pot? Then also protect the pot itself with bubble wrap, so the root ball doesn't freeze through completely.

How much water does the Trachycarpus Fortunei need?

During the growing season (March to October), water the Trachycarpus Fortunei regularly, as soon as the top layer of soil feels dry. The core of the soil can stay lightly moist, but avoid standing water: soggy roots quickly lead to root rot. In winter, the palm needs much less water. A palm in a pot dries out faster than one planted in the ground, so it needs checking more often.

Why does my Trachycarpus Fortunei get brown leaf tips?

Brown tips on the fan leaves are usually a sign of overly dry air, irregular watering, or excess salts from overfertilising. On older, lower leaves, a slightly brown edge is completely normal: the plant sheds them to put energy into new growth in the crown. Do you see brown leaves especially after winter? That's often due to 'frost drought': the leaves lost moisture through sun and wind, while the frozen roots couldn't absorb water.

Choose a spacious pot with sufficient drainage holes and add a layer of clay pebbles or vulcastrat at the bottom for extra drainage.
