These palms grow on the coast in Spain, out in the wind, and kink their leaves for protection. With this safety measure the palm makes sure a whole stem doesn't snap off with every gust of wind.

The Trachycarpus is a striking outdoor plant that grows high up in the Himalayas in the wild. Its Dutch nicknames are the hemp palm and the hand palm, and it belongs to the Arecaceae family. The Trachycarpus is a well-known garden plant thanks to its beautiful fan-shaped leaves. It's a hardy palm that will get through our winters outdoors without any trouble!

The Trachycarpus is a real sun worshipper and needs that light intensity to stay beautiful and healthy. That does also make it a thirsty plant! Giving the Trachycarpus some extra plant food in the summer months does it good and supports its growth and development. Use a palm food and never give more than the recommended amount.

How much water does the Trachycarpus - 250 cm need?

As mentioned, the Trachycarpus is a thirsty garden plant, and in the summer months especially it needs a drink every day. In summer the soil absolutely shouldn't dry out, but do watch out for too much water: the leaf tips will turn brown or black. When that happens you can prune those leaves, and then cut back on the water a little. In the winter months the soil can dry out slightly between waterings. With less sunlight reaching the plant in winter, it uses less water too.

How much light does the Trachycarpus - 250 cm need?

The ideal spot for the Trachycarpus is one with as much sunlight as possible. Both indoors and outdoors this plant can stand in full, direct sun. Do choose a spot out of the wind and draughts, as these make the leaves more likely to tear. As mentioned, the Trachycarpus is hardy, which means this gorgeous palm survives temperatures down to -18 degrees Celsius. At temperatures like that we do recommend bringing the palm inside or protecting it with special winter covers.
