The Polyscias Fabian, also known as the Aralia, originally comes from Africa and Asia. It isn't difficult to care for, but it may ask just a little more attention than other plants. As well as looking gorgeous and bringing a tropical feel with it, this plant is a star at purifying the air: its leaves turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, and who doesn't want that?
Here's a nice bit of trivia: in Greek, 'Polyscias' means much shade. That refers to the fact that the Polyscias Fabian offers plenty of shade, because in the wild this plant can grow into an absolute giant of a tree.
Care & tips for the Polyscias Fabian
The Polyscias Fabian isn't a difficult plant to look after, though it does ask a little more attention than others. The Polyscias needs the right spot: in daylight, without too much direct sunlight. This houseplant is naturally prone to pests, so be careful not to stand it in a draught, where it's even more vulnerable to insects. If pests do turn up, happily they're easy to deal with using an organic or chemical treatment. The Polyscias can take some extra plant food in summer, though we'd strongly advise against it in winter. Take care not to feed too much either, because that can damage the plant.
How much water does the Polyscias Fabian need?
Over the summer months the soil can stay moist at all times. Don't let it dry out between waterings. Your fingers are all you need to check: feel the soil, and if it's dry a little deeper down as well, the plant is ready for more water. We'd recommend giving small amounts several times over, rather than a large amount in one go. Over the winter months the soil can dry out a little between waterings before you water again.
Because the Polyscias Fabian comes from the tropics, we'd recommend misting this houseplant regularly to keep the humidity up. Misting also helps keep pests at bay.
How much light does the Polyscias Fabian need?
The Polyscias Fabian is happiest in a bright spot, without too much direct sunlight. Direct sun does this houseplant no favours, and a few hours of indirect sunlight is plenty. It doesn't like changing places either, so try not to move it too often.
Is the Polyscias Fabian a toxic houseplant?
Happily the Polyscias Fabian isn't toxic, which makes it the ideal houseplant if you have small children or mischievous pets!
