Product Description
The Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix are bulbs of grape hyacinths in a blend of various shades of blue, purple and white. Each stem carries a dense cluster of small, rounded florets that together resemble a bunch of grapes. The plants grow to about 15 to 20 centimetres tall. The bulbs are tough and easy.
These bulbs are size 7/8, generous for grape hyacinths. They look lovely in pots and containers, along the edge of the border and scattered in the lawn, where they naturalise by themselves. With 50 bulbs you fill two to three pots or a spot at the front of the border. With 100 or 200 bulbs you create a colourful ribbon along the path or a first group in the grass, and with 400 bulbs you plant a good part of the lawn; allow 100 to 150 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other naturalising bulbs, such as crocuses that flower just before them. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix?
Give the bulbs a spot in autumn, from mid-October to the end of November. The soil has then cooled to below 10 °C, so the bulbs root without sprouting. If the ground is still open in December, you can plant then too. The winter cold in the soil is essential for flowering, so do not keep the bulbs until spring.
When do the Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix flower?
The Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix flower in March and April. A cluster stays at its best for about two to three weeks, and because the colours do not all open at once, you have something in flower for a long time. In a pot on the patio they often get going earlier, after a chilly March later. Year after year the bulbs form offsets and self-seed, so they spread through the garden.
Care and tips Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix
Put the bulbs pointed end up 8 to 10 centimetres deep in the ground, about three times the bulb height, and leave 5 to 7 centimetres between them. In the lawn, lift small plugs of turf with a bulb planter or spade, place the bulbs in the holes and press the turf back down. Any well-drained garden soil is suitable. For pots, use one with a drainage hole and a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom; have a look among our outdoor pots and baskets. Only mow the grass once the grape hyacinth foliage has turned yellow, about six weeks after flowering. Feeding is not necessary.
Water needs of the Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix
Grape hyacinths are undemanding. Outdoors in the ground, extra water is almost never needed. Water bulbs in pots from March whenever the surface of the soil is dry, without keeping them wet.
Light needs of the Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix
Choose a sunny spot; the more sun, the denser the clusters and the brighter the colours. In deep shade flowering falls short.
Are the Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix toxic?
The Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix are mildly toxic if ingested. So do not plant them where pets like to dig, and keep the bulbs out of reach of young children. If you have sensitive skin, wear gloves when planting.
How will my Grape hyacinth bulbs Magic mix be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
