Product Description
The Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs are extra-large bulbs of the best-known grape hyacinth, Muscari armeniacum. Above narrow, grassy leaves stand dense clusters of deep-blue, grape-shaped flowers on sturdy little stems of about 15 to 20 centimetres. They are strong and hardy, and within a few years they form a dense blue carpet.
At bulb size 8/9 these bulbs are larger than usual for grape hyacinths. You can see it in the flowering: fuller clusters and often more than one flower stem per bulb. That is why they look good straight away in pots and planters on the patio, at the front of the border and in the lawn. With 50 bulbs you fill two or three pots or a planter, with 100 bulbs a spot at the front of the border. With 200 or 400 bulbs you create a blue ribbon along the path or a generous patch in the grass; allow 100 to 150 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other naturalising bulbs, such as white or yellow spring bloomers. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs?
Plant the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs in autumn, from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. They first form roots and often a few leaves, which come through the winter without any problem. As long as the ground is not frozen, you can carry on into December. Without winter cold they do not flower well, so do not wait until spring to plant them.
When do the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs flower?
The Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs flower in March and April. A cluster stays attractive for two to three weeks, and because the large bulbs often produce several stems, each plant flowers for longer. In a pot in a sheltered spot they flower earlier, after a cold spring later. Year after year the bulbs form offsets and self-seed, so the group grows by itself.
Care and tips Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs
Plant the bulbs pointed end up at a depth of 8 to 10 centimetres, about three times the bulb height, and 5 to 8 centimetres apart. In the lawn, lift small plugs of turf with a bulb planter and place the bulbs in little groups. Ordinary, well-drained garden soil is fine. For pots, use a model with a drainage hole and some gravel at the bottom; have a look at our outdoor pots and baskets. Only mow the grass once the foliage has turned yellow, about six weeks after flowering. Extra fertiliser is not needed.
Water needs of the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs
In the garden grape hyacinths need no extra water. Only in pots should you water from February as soon as the top of the soil is dry. Soil that is too wet is the biggest risk; do not leave water in the saucer.
Light needs of the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs
A sunny spot gives the densest clusters and the deepest blue. They also do well under deciduous trees, because plenty of light still reaches the ground there in March and April.
Are the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs toxic?
The Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs are mildly toxic if ingested. Keep the bulbs out of reach of pets and young children. If you have sensitive skin, wear gloves when planting.
How will my Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum XL bulbs be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
