Product Description

The Flower bulb mix Dry garden is a mix of flower bulbs that cope well with a warm, dry position. The flowers come in assorted colours and the species vary in height, giving you a varied and natural look. Even in a hot summer they keep going, because they need little water.

The bulbs are size 10/12. They are at home in a sunny border, a gravel garden, along a warm wall and in a pot or tub on the patio, and you can also cut the stems for the vase. With 35 bulbs you fill a large tub or a few smaller pots, with 70 bulbs a generous spot in the border. With 140 or 280 bulbs you can plant a whole sunny bed or a strip along the drive; allow 40 to 60 bulbs per square metre. Among our other flower bulb mixes you will find mixes that flower earlier in spring. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Flower bulb mix Dry garden?

Even though this mix only starts flowering in May, the bulbs go into the ground in autumn: between mid-October and the end of November, once the soil temperature has dropped below 10 °C. If December stays frost-free, you can still plant then. The winter cold is needed for good flowering, so do not keep the bulbs until spring.

When do the Flower bulb mix Dry garden flower?

The Flower bulb mix Dry garden flowers from May through August. Not all species are in bloom at the same time: the first open at the end of spring, others take over in summer. A single flower stays attractive for one to three weeks. In a pot on a warm patio flowering often starts a little earlier, after a cold spring rather later. Let the foliage die back after flowering and the bulbs will return the following year.

Care and tips Flower bulb mix Dry garden

As a rule of thumb, plant a bulb two to three times as deep as it is tall; for this size that comes to 10 to 12 centimetres, with about 10 centimetres between the bulbs. Poor, sandy or gravelly soil is fine, as long as rainwater drains away quickly. In a tub, make sure there are drainage holes and a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom; have a look at our outdoor pots and baskets for a sturdy one. Cut off spent flowers and leave the foliage until it withers. These bulbs need little feeding: some bulb fertiliser in spring is sufficient.

Water needs of the Flower bulb mix Dry garden

In open ground there is rarely anything to do after planting; only in an exceptionally dry autumn do you water once. In a pot or tub in the sun the soil dries out faster: water about once a week from the moment the leaves appear. The bulbs do not tolerate wet feet, so never leave water in the saucer.

Light needs of the Flower bulb mix Dry garden

Choose a spot in full sun, with at least six hours of direct light a day. A south-facing border or a gravel bed against a warm wall is ideal. In shade the flowers stay smaller and the stems become floppy.

Are the Flower bulb mix Dry garden toxic?

The Flower bulb mix Dry garden is mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulbs themselves. Store and plant them out of reach of pets and young children.

How will my Flower bulb mix Dry garden be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
