The Calathea Picturata is a beautiful plant with dark green edges, light green leaves and a burgundy underside that shows itself when the plant folds up in the evening. This 'shade plant' comes from the tropical rainforests of South America and is also known as the 'prayer plant', because of the way its leaves point upwards at night.

How much water does the Calathea Picturata - 70cm need?
The soil of the Calathea Picturata likes to stay lightly moist, but be careful not to overwater. Too much water builds up at the bottom of the pot, leaving the roots standing in water. That can lead to root rot, which is eventually fatal for the plant. Something you'll want to avoid, of course.
To keep from giving the plant too much water, we recommend pushing two fingers deep into the soil before every watering. Does the soil feel dry? Then it's time to water. Is it still moist from last time? Then hold off a little longer. It's also good to mist the Calathea lightly once a week to keep the humidity up, which is essential to your plant's health.
How much light does the Calathea Picturata - 70cm need?
The Calathea Picturata originally comes from the tropics, where it grows in the shade of larger plants and trees. That's why it doesn't cope well with direct sunlight. To keep the plant at its best, give it a shady spot. Bright indirect light is no problem for the Calathea; as long as the light isn't too intense, the plant will do well in it. Do watch out though: if the Calathea gets too much light, it will let you know by curling its leaves.
