The fig tree is a strong outdoor plant that can grow both in the open ground and in a pot. In spring and summer it develops large, decorative leaves and later in the season the figs appear. Prune the tree in late fall or early spring to encourage shape and fruit production. The fig tree is moderately hardy and needs extra protection in severe frosts.
