The lush crown, filled with stately and bright green leaves that can grow up to 60 centimeters long, makes the Yucca Rostrata an absolute eye-catcher in your garden.
Where is the origin of the yucca?
Originally, the Yucca is native to regions of northeastern Mexico, sprawling West Texas and the mysterious Chihuahua Desert. So the Yucca Rostrata is sure to bring a touch of exotic warmth to your Dutch garden.
Is the yucca poisonous?
Unfortunately, the plant is toxic when ingested. The plant contains chemicals called saponins, which can cause gastrointestinal problems if ingested. Symptoms of poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It is important to consider this if you have small children or curious pets. Watering the Yucca Rostrata
The Yucca Rostrata is a slow grower that also needs very little water. It is important to check the soil regularly and make sure it does not dry out completely, but also does not remain constantly wet. In the beginning it takes some trial and error: give small amounts of water and observe how quickly the soil dries out. That way you will learn what the ideal rhythm is for your plant. Rather too little than too much. The Yucca can withstand drought well, but is sensitive to wet feet.
The perfect location for the Palm Lily
The Yucca Rostrata is a real sunbather and feels best in a sunny, sheltered spot. Avoid moving the plant often, as it needs to get used to its surroundings. Too many moves can interfere with its growth and development.
Although this plant is reasonably hardy to about -7 °C (-4 °F), extra protection is necessary in severe frosts. Should the temperature drop further, wrap the plant with a tree cover, fleece or bubble wrap. This will help your Yucca through the winter and keep it healthy and strong.
Giving plant food to the Yucca
In the summer months, the Yucca is allowed some nutrition once every two months, in the winter this is not necessary. This is because then the plant is in a dormant state and this can affect growth. Preferably use mediterranean plant food and never use more than the recommended amount.
Repotting the Yucca
When repotting your Palm Lily, choose a new plant pot which is at least 20% larger than the root ball. This way, the Yucca Rostrata can develop further and the roots have enough new space to grow further and stronger. Repotting the Yucca Rostrata is preferably done in the spring. Then any damaged roots can recover well in the sunny period.
Diseases and pests in the Palm Lily
The Yucca, like other garden plants, can also suffer from pests. With outdoor plants, this usually involves lice. By checking your plant regularly, you can act quickly and most pests are easy to control.
An effective, preventive measure is to spray the leaves with water. After all, many insects do not like a moist environment. If this does not help sufficiently, then you can consider using a suitable bug spray to use. This will keep your Yucca healthy and in top condition.
Why does the Yucca Rostrata have brown tips?
Brown spots on the Yucca Rostrata are fairly common and usually not a cause for concern. It is partly part of the plant's natural growth. Causes may include dry air, not enough water, cold drafts or frost damage. As long as the rest of the plant looks healthy, there is nothing to worry about. Provide a sunny spot, well-drained soil and water in moderation to reduce the chance of brown spots.
