Frequently asked questions about the Strelitzia

Quick answers to the most frequently asked questions about water, light, nutrition and care.
How can I increase the humidity for my Bird of Paradise plant?
Strelitzias like high humidity. In a house with dry air (for example, in winter), you can increase the humidity by: - Spraying the leaves regularly with water (note: not in direct sunlight). - Placing a humidifier in the room. - Placing the plant on a saucer with water and hydro granules, so that the evaporated water increases the humidity. This helps the Strelitzia to feel comfortable and stay healthy!
When should I repot my Bird of Paradise plant?
The Strelitzia grows quickly, so it is a good idea to repot it every 2-3 years to ensure that the roots have enough space to spread out. For all the information you need about repotting, read our blog.
Why is my Strelitzia growing so slowly?
If your Bird of Paradise plant is not growing quickly, this may be due to insufficient light, too much or too little water, or insufficient nutrition. Ensure that your plant receives sufficient direct sunlight (at least 4-6 hours per day) and that you adjust the watering to the seasons. It needs less water in winter. A lack of monthly fertiliser during the growing season can also prevent the plant from growing optimally.
My Strelitzia has brown spots on its leaves. What could be causing this?
Brown spots can have various causes, such as too much sun or too little water. If your plant gets too much direct sunlight, the leaves can burn, resulting in brown spots. On the other hand, excessively dry air or irregular watering can also lead to brown edges. Check the watering and make sure the humidity in the room is not too low, especially in winter when the heating often dries out the air.
Should I dust the leaves?
Dusting the plant is a good idea! It is important to wipe the leaves of your Strelitzia occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust. This not only helps to keep the plant looking neat, but also allows it to breathe better and photosynthesise optimally. The more light the leaves can absorb, the healthier your plant will be.
Why are the leaves turning yellow?
There are several reasons why leaves may turn yellow. It could be due to too much or too little water, or a lack of nutrients. Check your watering routine and ensure that you are not overwatering the plant.
Is Strelitzia toxic to pets?
The bird of paradise plant is toxic if ingested. So be careful if you have pets or small children. The sap that comes out of the stems can also irritate the skin.
Can the Bird of Paradise plant be kept outdoors?
The Strelitzia can be kept outdoors, but only if the temperature remains above 15°C. In summer, you can safely place it outside, but beware of the wind. Place the plant in a sunny spot or ensure that it receives some shade during the hottest hours of the day.
How big does a Strelitzia grow?
Indoors, the Bird of Paradise plant can reach a height of 1.5 to 2 metres, depending on the care and light it receives. When you repot the plant, the roots will have more space and the plant will also grow taller. Make sure you give it enough space so that the plant can develop optimally.
The leaves of my Strelitzia are full of tears and irregularities
This is completely normal and is part of the nature of the Bird of Paradise plant. The plant is even known for its leaves often tearing or showing irregularities, especially as they grow larger. This happens because the leaves are often exposed to wind and other elements in their natural environment. It is a characteristic of the plant and absolutely nothing to worry about. Although it may not be the most “perfect” appearance, it is part of the exotic charm of the Bird of Paradise plant. These damages cannot really be prevented, but they do not have a negative impact on the health of the plant. So don't be distracted by the imperfections, they are part of the plant!
My Strelitzia isn't flowering. What now?
Only Strelitzia Reginae can flower, so if you have another variety such as Strelitzia Nicolai or Augusta, you won't see any flowers. If you do have a Reginae and it isn't flowering, there could be several reasons for this. Flowering requires patience and the right conditions. Make sure your plant gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, as light is essential. In addition, it often takes several years before a young plant shows its iconic bird of paradise flowers. So don't give up too quickly. With the right care, flowering will come naturally.

Everything about caring for the Bird of Paradise plant

The Strelitzia is a real eye-catcher for your home! She loves sun, warmth and a bit of humidity. What makes this plant so special are her large leaves, which naturally tend to tear and have rugged edges. It might sound a bit rough, but these irregularities are exactly what characterises the Bird of Paradise plant.

Best location for the Strelitzia

The Bird of Paradise plant loves the sun! Place the plant preferably in a spot where it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A south- or west-facing window is perfect, as this offers the most sun. In less sunny conditions the plant may struggle and the leaves will not develop beautifully.

So always provide a nice bright spot to let your Strelitzia grow at its best.

Watering the Bird of Paradise plant

Like any tropical plant, the Strelitzia needs slightly moist soil. Make sure the soil is not waterlogged, as this can cause root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), the Bird of Paradise plant needs water about 2-3 times per week. Check the soil carefully each time. You can also use a water meter or moisture meter for this. These meters show exactly how moist the soil is and whether watering is needed.

In autumn and winter, watering can be reduced to 1-2 times per week, depending on the temperature and the humidity in your home.

Flowering of the Bird of Paradise plant

Not all Strelitzia species bloom. The Strelitzia Reginae is the only one that produces the iconic bird of paradise flower. But here too: not every plant blooms at the same time. As with many plants, flowering depends on the growing conditions and the health of the plant. Some Strelitzias produce lush flowers, while others do not develop any flowers even after years. The Strelitzia Reginae needs specific conditions to bloom, and this process can take three to five years. Nevertheless, this species remains the most popular thanks to its striking, exotic flowers that give the plant a tropical look.

Humidity and temperature

The Strelitzia is used to warm and dry environments, like in her natural tropical habitat. She thrives best at temperatures between 18-25°C. Cold draughts or lower temperatures can harm the plant, so avoid spots with air conditioning or cold airflow.

Humidity is important too. This plant likes slight humidity, especially in winter when the air indoors is often dry due to heating. To remedy this, you can mist the leaves regularly, especially when the humidity in your home is low. Do this with a plant sprayer or mister. This mimics a tropical rain shower and helps prevent pests

Extra tip: Place the plant on a tray with water and pebbles to increase humidity. This is especially handy during the winter months.

Strelitzia pot and soil

The Bird of Paradise plant needs well-draining, airy soil. A mix of potting soil with vulcastrator hydro granules works excellently. This ensures the water drains away quickly, which prevents root rot. Choose a decorative pot that is at least 2-3 cm wider than the plant's root ball, so the roots have enough space to grow.

Feeding the Bird of Paradise plant

During the growing season (March to September), the Strelitzia can use some extra feeding. Apply liquid food for green plants or food for houseplants monthly to support her growth.

In winter it is important to give your plants some rest. Many people do not realise that too much fertiliser in winter can be harmful to your plant, especially because the plant is much less active during this period.

When you feed in winter, the nutrients can build up in the soil, which can lower the pH value of the soil. This makes the soil too acidic, which can damage your plant's roots. In winter, plants absorb much less water. If there is then too much fertiliser in the soil, the roots cannot properly process this over-fertilised and acidic soil.

Repotting the Strelitzia: how and when?

Repot the Strelitzia every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Because this fast grower quickly outgrows her pot, she regularly needs more space to stay healthy.

Why you should repot the Bird of Paradise plant

As with most houseplants, the Strelitzia grows better when her roots have enough room to spread out. Over time the plant can fill up the pot it is in. This can cause the roots to get in each other's way, the drainage to work less well, and not enough nutrients to reach the soil. Repotting ensures that the plant can benefit from fresh nutrients again and has enough space to grow.

The best time to repot your Bird of Paradise plant is in spring, when the plant enters her active growth phase again. This is the moment when the roots can start developing new roots in the new growing season and can adapt more quickly to the new pot.

We explain step by step how to do this in our blog ‘How to repot your plant’.

Pruning the Strelitzia

As with other houseplants, pruning is an important part of care. Although the Bird of Paradise plant is naturally a strong plant, pruning can help to keep her healthy and beautiful, and even to stimulate growth.

Why prune?

Pruning is necessary for several reasons:

  • Removing dead or damaged leaves: this prevents the plant from wasting energy on weakened parts and helps prevent disease.
  • Shaping: the Strelitzia can sometimes grow wild. Pruning helps to give the plant a tidy and controlled shape.
  • Encouraging flowering: good pruning promotes new growth and can even improve flowering, especially in older plants.

When to prune?

The best time to prune is in spring or early summer, when the plant is actively growing. Avoid pruning in winter, when the plant is resting. Do not prune too much, but tidy the plant up in spring to maintain its shape.

How do you prune the Bird of Paradise plant?

  • Use clean, sharp scissors: make sure the pruning shears are disinfected to prevent disease.
  • Remove dead or wilted leaves: cut leaves that are yellow, brown or withered close to the base.
  • Trim damaged leaves: remove damaged leaves to save the plant energy.
  • Prune the stem if needed: if the stem is too big or out of balance, you can trim a bit for more compact growth.
  • Leave healthy leaves: only prune the bad leaves, as healthy leaves help the plant to gather energy.

Propagating the Strelitzia (cuttings)

Would you like to propagate your Bird of Paradise plant and get a new plant? You can! Propagating Strelitzias is relatively easy, but it does require patience. There are two ways to propagate the Strelitzia: by cuttings (propagating baby plants) and by dividing the root ball. We are happy to explain this in our blog ‘How do I propagate my houseplant’.

Common problems with the Strelitzia

Like many tropical plants, the Strelitzia can suffer from certain diseases or pests. The most common problems are:

Root rot: this can occur from too much water. Ensure a well-draining pot and only water when the soil is dry.

Leaf spots: brown or yellow spots can indicate too much direct sunlight or irregular watering.

Mealybug: these small insects can affect the plant. Remove them carefully with a damp cloth or use a mild pesticide.
