Strelitzia plants: for a tropical interior

The Strelitzia, also known as the Bird of Paradise plant, is a beautiful houseplant which is loved for its large, robust leaves and tropical look. This plant naturally has large, green leaves with cracks, bumps and sometimes brown spots, giving it a lush and exotic character. The Strelitzia is a great choice to add a tropical feel to your interior.

Where does the Bird of Paradise plant come from?

The Strelitzia is native to South Africa. Here the plant grows in tropical and subtropical areas. A fun fact: The name "Strelitzia" derives from Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of England. The Strelitzia was given this name in honor of Charlotte's connection to the botanical world.

Can a Strelitzia flower?

The specific species Strelitzia Reginae can flower! However, this does not happen with every plant, and flowering comes only after at least 5-8 years of care. The flowers are a striking orange with blue highlights and can grow as large as 20 cm. Flowering occurs primarily in the fall, and it is important to move the plant to a cooler location in the winter to encourage flowering.

Is the Strelitzia poisonous?

The Bird of Paradise plant is toxic to both humans and pets when ingested. The sap in the stems contains substances such as saponins and calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea when ingested. Therefore, keep the plant away from small children and pets. Fortunately, there are plenty of pet-friendly houseplants found as an alternative at Green Bubble!

What types of Strelitzias are there?

There are several varieties of the Strelitzia. Here are the three most popular varieties:

  • Strelitzia Nicolai: this variety has large, green leaves with subtle cracks. It is a beautiful, full-growing plant that gives any space a tropical feel.
  • Strelitzia Augusta: this tough variety has one thick trunk from which several large leaves grow. The leaves naturally exhibit large cracks and brown edges.
  • Strelitzia Reginae: The Reginae has narrow, pointed leaves growing from separate stems, giving it a special appearance. This species is also the only one that can flower, but this is not guaranteed.

How to choose the perfect Strelitzia?

When choosing the perfect Bird of Paradise plant, consider the following points:

  • Space: Consider how much space you have for the plant. For example, the Strelitzia Nicolai is a larger, wider-spreading plant that needs a lot of space, while the Strelitzia Reginae is a more compact variety.
  • Light: Make sure you know how much light your plant needs. The Strelitzia needs lots of sunlight, so a spot in front of a south-facing window is ideal.
  • Care time: if you don't have much time to take care of your plant, the Strelitzia Reginae is a good choice because it needs less water than the larger species.

Taking care of the Bird of Paradise plant

The Strelitzia is a easy plant to take care of. Use these tips to make this plant shine!

  • Watering: water the plant regularly in summer, but make sure the soil is not too wet in winter. Always keep the soil slightly moist. If necessary, use a moisture meter, especially if the plant is repotted.
  • Light: Put the Strelitzia in a sunny spot, preferably in front of a south-facing window, as the plant needs a lot of sunlight.
  • Nutrition: feed the Bird of Paradise plant once a month from March to September with Strelitzia or houseplant food. From September to March do not give
  • Repot: Repot the Strelitzia when the roots fill the pot or when the plant hangs to the side. This gives the roots more space and promotes plant health.
