Strelitzia Nicolai plants for the home

The Strelitzia Nicolai, also known as the Bird of Paradise plant, is a popular and impressive houseplant from the Strelitzia-family. This cool houseplant is native to South Africa and is notable for its large, glossy leaves with characteristic cracks and brown edges.

This Strelitzia can reach impressive heights and is available in a variety of sizes. Whether you choose a compact plant of 90cm, ideal for filling an empty corner in the house, or for a imposing variant of up to 250cm that makes an immediate statement; the Strelitzia Nicolai always remains an impressive eye-catcher.

Choosing the perfect Strelitzia Nicolai? Here's how to do it!

  • Size: choose a compact plant for a smaller space or go for a large Strelitzia Nicolai if you have the space. Allow for 30/40cm of growth per year.
  • Light: provide a bright spot, preferably near a south-facing window.
  • Pot and drainage: choose one decorative pot with good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Age & growth: small, young plants grow faster, older plants are more stable but larger.

Is the Strelitzia Nicolai air-purifying?

The Strelitzia Nicolai contributes to a fresh and healthy living environment. By removing pollutants from the air and creating oxygen, this plant is not only beautiful, but also functional in improving your indoor environment.

Is a Strelitzia Nicolai poisonous?

The Strelitzia Nicolai is mildly poisonous. The sap released during pruning can cause skin irritation, and ingesting parts of the plant is harmful. Caution is advised for pets and small children. Would you prefer a non-toxic houseplant? Then check out our collection of animal-friendly plants.

Why do the leaves of my Strelitzia Nicolai curl?

Leaf curl can be caused by too little or too much water, low humidity, temperature fluctuations, nutritional deficiencies or pests, among other reasons. Maintain a consistent water regime without excess water, increase humidity by spraying the plant with a plant sprayer, keep the temperature between 18-27°C and check the plant regularly for pests.

Can a Strelitzia Nicolai bloom in the living room?

As an indoor plant, the Strelitzia Nicolai has no flowering period, but for flower lovers there is a wonderful alternative: the Strelitzia Reginae. This variety is known for its striking flowers and can begin to bloom around its eighth year of life. During this flowering period, the characteristic, exotic flowers that give the Bird of Paradise plant its name appear. After flowering, however, it can take up to 12 months for flowers to reappear. So with proper care and a little patience, you can enjoy the spectacular blooms of this special plant for years to come.

Concise care of the Strelitzia Nicolai

The Strelitzia Nicolai is a relatively easy houseplant that does require some attention for optimal growth. This tropical plant thrives at a minimum temperature of 15°C, plenty of light (at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day) and moist but well-drained potting soil.

  • Watering: keep the potting soil slightly moist, especially in summer. Avoid leaving water standing to avoid root rot. Regularly spraying the leaves with a water sprayer increases humidity and keeps the plant healthy.
  • Light & temperature: place the plant in a bright spot, preferably south window. Avoid drafts and temperature differences.
  • Repotting: repot in the spring when the plant gets too big for the pot. Choose a pot about 20% larger than the previous one and make sure it has good drainage.
  • Pruning: remove old leaves by cutting them off close to the stem. Beware of the poisonous sap and wear gloves if necessary.
  • Nutrition: give from March to September additional food according to the recommended dosage. In autumn and winter do not feed.

Preventing diseases and pests

Mealybugs are a common pest of Strelitzia Nicolai. You can easily remove these white balls with a wet cloth. Regular spraying of the leaves helps keep pests at bay and the plant clean.
