Versatile Philodendron houseplants
The beautiful Philodendron originates from the lush rainforests of South America. With over 500 different species, each Philodendron is unique and charming in its own way. These members of the arum family are divided into climbing and non-climbing varieties, with the climbing species with aerial roots hugging the jungle trees like true adventurers in search of much-needed light. This is where the plant gets its name, as ‘Philodendron’ means ‘love of the tree’ in Greek.
Is the Philodendron air-purifying?
The Philodendron is known for its air-purifying properties. This houseplant helps purify the air by absorbing and breaking down harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene. It is important to note that while houseplants like the Philodendron can contribute to healthier indoor air, they are not a substitute for adequate ventilation in a room.
Is the Philodendron a toxic houseplant?
Most species of the Philodendron are toxic when ingested. So be careful if you have small children or hungry pets. We recommend putting this houseplant in a place where it is safe. Has a child or pet ingested a Philodendron leaf? Always consult a doctor.

Taking care of the Philodendron
Philodendron species are popular but also easy houseplants to look after. It is not a sought-after houseplant in the Netherlands for nothing. Make sure you know the right care tips and enjoy your beautiful plant for as long as possible!
Watering the Philodendron
The water requirements of the Philodendron depend on its location and size. In the beginning, it is advisable to carefully adjust the watering to the plant's needs. Make sure that the soil is always slightly moist. Around the winter months, the soil may feel a little drier for a week before watering again.
Choosing the best location for the Philodendron
This cool houseplant is pretty easy when it comes to its location. In general, the Philodendron does well in a spot in normal daylight, without direct sunlight. Turn the plant now and then so that it does not grow crooked. Because of its tropical origin, this plant does not like the cold. Make sure it is at least 15 degrees during the day and at least 12 degrees at night. Keep it nice and warm for a happy plant!
Pruning the Philodendron
Is your Philodendron plant a bit on the large side? No worries, these houseplants are easy to trim or prune where necessary. The climbing varieties will always climb neatly along the moss stick or mesh rack, keeping them in nice shape. However, the upright varieties may develop unwanted shoots. Feel free to cut these off with scissors right at the sprouting point. Old leaves and stems can also be cut off easily, as the Philodendron recovers well. This is how you keep your plant in top form!
Repotting the Philodendron
Is your Philodendron growing fast, thanks to the good care it receives? Then it might be time for a new pot. We recommend repotting the Philodendron in spring. This is because during this season the houseplant has the most energy to repair any damaged roots, as spring is the starting point of its growing season. Make sure the new pot is about 20% bigger than the previous one. A good guideline is to repot the Philodendron once every two years.
Feeding the Philodendron
During spring and summer, the Philodendron is in its growth period. If you want to give your Philodendron some extra vigour, we recommend giving extra nutrition during these seasons. General houseplant food is suitable for the Philodendron, but make sure you never give more than the recommended amount. This is because too much nutrition can increase the acidity of the soil and damage the roots of the Philodendron. Remember that extra feeding is not necessary in the winter months, as the houseplant is dormant and excessive feeding can cause damage.
Controlling diseases and pests in the Philodendron
In general, this easy-to-care-for houseplant is not very susceptible to pests, especially the varieties with sturdier leaves rarely suffer from them. Nevertheless, it can sometimes happen. If your houseplant suffers from mealy bugs, it is advisable to take immediate action. Spray the plant and remove all mealybugs with a damp cloth. If this does not help, you can also use biological pesticides.
