Chamaerops Humilis
The Chamaerops, also known as the European dwarf palm, is a robust and versatile palm that looks great indoors and outdoors. With its fan-like leaves and sturdy appearance, the Chamaerops adds a tropical touch to any room or garden. This palm is extremely
The Chamaerops Humilis
The amazing, tropical Chamaerops Humilis, also called the Dwarf Palm is the only palm species that has its roots in Europe. In fact, the Chamaerops Humilis grows mainly around the Mediterranean Sea. The Chamaerops Humilis is nicknamed ‘Dwarf Palm’ because it does not grow so mega large compared to other palm species. This fantastic Chamaerops Humilis is hardy and can withstand frost well. This makes the Chamaerops Humilis an excellent indoor and outdoor plant. Do not be alarmed if the Chamaerops Humilis has kinked or bent leaves. This is a well-known characteristic of the Palm and gives it its lush appearance. As the Chamaerops Humilis grows in the wind on the coast, the palm protects itself by snapping its leaves. Thus, the Chamaerops Humilis prevents an entire branch from breaking off with every strong gust of wind. Clever, isn't it?
Stand
As mentioned, the Chamaerops Humilis originates from an area where the sun shines a little more often than in the Netherlands. So the Chamaerops Humilis can stand some sunlight and loves to be in full sun. You should therefore place it in a sunny spot and make sure the potting soil is always slightly moist, especially in summer.
Watering
The soil of the Chamaerops Humilis should always remain slightly moist. Especially in summer with hot days and lots of sunshine, the Chamaerops Humilis will process water faster. With hot days, the Chamaerops Humilis may even receive some water several times a week. You can best measure the humidity of your Chamaerops Humilis by feeling a little deeper into the soil with your fingers. If the soil is very dry after a few days, it is time to water again. Is your Chamaerops Humilis' soil still damp from last time? Then it's better to wait a while. If you want to put your Chamaerops Humilis in an ornamental pot in the garden, it is important to check whether there are drainage holes in the ornamental pot. This way, excess water, such as rainwater, can drain away properly and cannot get stuck at the roots. If there are no holes in the pot, too much water will remain at the bottom of the pot and can lead to root rot of the Chamaerops Humilis. Root rot is difficult to remedy and is best prevented.
Discolouration and broken leaves
Snapped leaves and small holes are well-known characteristics of the Chamaerops Humilis palm. Fortunately, this is nothing to worry about. As the Chamaerops Humilis grows up on the coast in the winds of the Mediterranean, the plant has found a way to protect itself from the strong winds. The Chamaerops Humilis snaps its leaves to prevent an entire stem from breaking off with every gust of wind. By snapping the leaf, the palm ensures that the wind can glide past the leaves, preventing damage.
The Chamaerops Humilis grows from the centre. New leaves grow as a small fan and will unfold themselves when large enough. The lower leaves of the Chamaerops Humilis are the oldest leaves that grew first and will therefore be the first to be shed. You can recognise this by their yellow or brown colour. Dying leaves are best pruned quickly. This prevents dying leaves from using up a lot of energy that the healthy leaves could make better use of. Prune the leaves as close to the trunk as possible with sharp scissors or a sharp knife.
Repotting the Chamaerops Humilis
We recommend repotting the Chamaerops Humilis every two years. The Chamaerops Humilis palm therefore does not need to be potted immediately upon delivery. Chamaerops Humilis can remain in its cultivation pot for another two years to allow its roots to grow bigger and stronger. If you do decide to repot the Chamaerops Humilis, this should be done properly. If you put the plant outside, there should be drainage holes in the ornamental pot so that the water can drain away. It is also a good idea to use hydro grains or stones. When using the Chamaerops Humilis as a houseplant, you should repot the plant using a watertight inner sleeve, filling castrat and a water meter.
Toxic
Fortunately, the Chamaerops Humilis is completely pet- and child-proof. This makes the Chamaerops Humilis a safe choice if you have children or pets. You can therefore confidently place the Chamaerops Humilis anywhere.
