The Polyscias Fabian, also known as the ming aralia, is a beloved houseplant with a playful, compact growth habit. Within the Polyscias family, the Fabian is one of the most popular varieties, thanks to its fine leaf structure and easy-to-combine size. Still, this houseplant does have a few specific care requirements to keep it healthy and full.

Best spot for the Polyscias Fabian

The Polyscias Fabian loves plenty of (indirect) light and prefers a bright spot close to a window. Do avoid strong, scorching afternoon sun behind glass, as this can burn the leaves. Just as important is a fixed, draft-free spot: the Fabian is sensitive to sudden temperature changes, cold and drafts, and quickly responds with leaf drop. So don't move the plant around too often and keep it away from a draughty door or window.

Watering the Polyscias Fabian

Water the Polyscias Fabian on average about once a week and let the top layer of soil dry out well between waterings. This houseplant is sensitive to both over- and underwatering: waterlogged soil fairly quickly leads to root rot, while a bone-dry root ball causes leaf drop. Not sure? Check the soil with your finger or use a moisture meter before watering again. The Fabian also appreciates slightly higher humidity: mist the leaves occasionally, especially in winter when the heating is on.

During the dormant period from September to March, skip the fertiliser — it's not needed and can even cause damage. Always follow the recommended amount on the packaging, as this varies by brand.

Well-draining potting soil is important for the Polyscias Fabian. Mix the potting soil with clay pebbles or vulcastrat for extra drainage. Choose a pot with enough drainage holes so excess water can run off. Repot the plant about once every two years, preferably in spring, into a pot no more than 2-3 cm larger than the previous one.

Pruning the Polyscias Fabian

The Polyscias Fabian needs little pruning maintenance, but you can safely cut it back if it grows too tall or one-sided. Prune just above a leaf or node with a clean, sharp pair of scissors, preferably during the growing season. This keeps the plant compact and maintains its beautiful, full shape.

Propagating the Polyscias Fabian (cuttings)

The easiest way to propagate is by taking cuttings. Cut a piece of stem about 10 cm long with a few leaves, remove the bottom leaves, and place the cutting in water or moist potting soil. In a warm, bright spot out of direct sunlight, new roots will form within a few weeks, after which you can pot up the cutting.

Common problems with the Polyscias Fabian

Leaf drop: the most common problem with the Fabian, usually caused by drafts, cold, or a sudden change of location. Place the plant in a fixed, draft-free spot.

Yellow leaves: usually indicates overwatering or a nutrient deficiency.

Brown leaf edges: often the result of dry air or too little water.

Mealybugs: check the plant regularly for these small, white pests, especially between the leaf axils.
