Frequently asked questions about Fargesia bamboo
Quick answers to the most frequently asked questions about winter hardiness, spreading, location and care.
Does Fargesia spread like other bamboo species?
No, and that's exactly why Fargesia is so popular. Unlike invasive bamboo species such as Phyllostachys, Fargesia doesn't form aggressive underground runners. The plant grows as a compact clump that stays neatly in place, ideal for smaller gardens or if you'd rather not install a root barrier.
How winter hardy is Fargesia bamboo?
Very winter hardy: Fargesia tolerates temperatures down to around -20°C and stays green all year round, even in winter. Is your plant in a pot? Protect the root ball with fleece or bubble wrap during prolonged severe frost, as roots in a pot are more vulnerable than in open ground.
What location does Fargesia bamboo need?
Fargesia thrives in a spot with partial shade to full sun. Preferably place the plant sheltered from dry, cold wind, especially in winter, as this can cause the leaves to dry out and discolor.
How often should I water my Fargesia bamboo?
Water regularly, especially during the first few years after planting and during dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist without letting water stand. Are the leaves curling up? That's a clear sign the plant is thirsty.
Do I need to prune Fargesia bamboo?
Drastic pruning isn't necessary, Fargesia already keeps itself neatly in shape. In spring, remove old, dried-out stems at ground level and occasionally thin out the clump, keeping the plant airy and healthy.
Why does my Fargesia have yellow leaves?
Yellow leaves usually indicate drought or a nutrient deficiency. First check that the soil isn't too dry, and feed with bamboo fertilizer or general garden plant feed during the growing season. A small amount of leaf drop in the first winter is normal, by the way, and nothing to worry about.
Can I propagate Fargesia?
Yes, the easiest way is by dividing the root ball in spring. Dig up part of the clump with enough roots and shoots and plant it separately. Keep the soil evenly moist until the new plant is well established.
