Everything you need to know about the Monstera (Hole Plant)

The Monstera, also known as the Hole Plant, is a striking and popular houseplant which gets its name from the unique holes and crevices in its leaves. This tropical plant adds an exotic touch to any interior and is known for its lush, climbing growth. The Monstera is a easy houseplant which requires little maintenance, making it ideal for beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts alike.

Origin of the Monstera plant

The Monstera is native to the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. In its natural habitat, it grows in the shade of larger trees, which means that it also prefers a place with indirect light at home.

How big does a Monstera grow?

The Hole Plant is a fast grower and can grow quite large, depending on care and environment. Its leaves can reach more than 30 centimeters in diameter. The plant has a climbing growth habit, which means it can stretch, especially if you give it room to climb up via a moss stick.

Is a Monstera poisonous?

The Monstera is poisonous if swallowed. The plant contains oxalate crystals that can cause irritation in the digestive system, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, pain in the mouth and throat, and abdominal pain. It is important to keep the plant out of the reach of children and pets. Do you have pets but still really want a green houseplant? Then check out our animal-friendly houseplants.

Different types of Hole Plants

There are several varieties of Monstera, each with unique characteristics. Although the Monstera is fundamentally the same, these varieties can be visually very different from each other, making choosing the perfect Hole Plant a fun challenge.

  • Monstera Deliciosa: The classic Monstera, known for its large, pinnate leaves. This plant can climb well or grow free-standing, depending on your preference.
  • Monstera Monkey Leaf: This smaller version has leaves that appear to be punctured in the center. It is ideal for smaller spaces and has a playful look.
  • Monstera Siltepecana: This Monstera looks nothing like its 2 relatives above. The Siltepecana has silver-green leaves with a nice pattern. The leaves have no holes but are a bit more pointed.

How to choose the perfect Monstera?

Choosing the right Monstera doesn't have to be difficult, but there are a few things to consider:

  • Location: Does your Monstera need lots of daylight, or does it prefer to grow in shade? The Monstera does well in indirect light, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
  • Time for care: Some Monstera species, such as the larger Deliciosa, require more maintenance (such as pruning and guiding the plant via a moss stick). Think about how much time you can devote to taking care of your plant.
  • Space: Monsteras can grow considerably, so make sure you have plenty of space. If you don't have much space, a smaller Monstera, such as the Monkey Leaf, may be a better choice. This plant is also available as hanging plant, an ideal option if you have limited space for houseplants. A hanging plant can be perfectly placed on top of a tall cabinet or attached to the ceiling with a hook.

Care of the Monstera

The Monstera is an easy houseplant, but it is important to provide proper care.

  • Watering: Water the plant weekly. The soil should remain slightly moist, but not too wet. Check regularly to make sure the soil is dry before watering again.
  • Light: The Monstera thrives best in normal daylight or light shade. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy and promote growth. Pruning also helps maintain the desired shape.
  • Humidity: Monsteras love high humidity. If the air in your home is dry, you can spray the plant regularly with a plant sprayer or use a humidifier.

Cuttings and repotting the Monstera

Want to grow new Monsteras? Cuttings are easy. Cut off a healthy stem and place it in a mixture of potting soil and sand. Keep the soil moist until the roots develop.

Repot your Hole Plant when the roots completely fill the pot. This will give the plant more room to grow. Make sure the new pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. In our blog, we are happy to tell you more about the repotting your houseplants.

Diseases and pests

Monstera can be affected by various diseases and pests. Watch for the following symptoms:

  • Root Rot: this is often caused by too much water. Ensure good drainage and use a moisture meter to check if the soil is too wet.
  • Spider mite: Spider mites are small insects that damage leaves. They can be controlled with a pesticide.
  • Mealybug: these small insects attach themselves to the leaves. Mealybug can be removed by wiping the leaves with a damp cloth.
