How often should I water my Ficus Elastica Robusta?
Water your rubber plant roughly once or twice a week. Feel the top few centimetres of soil first: if it's dry, you can water. If the soil still feels moist, wait a little longer.
In summer your Ficus needs more water than in winter, when the plant is dormant. Always let excess water drain away properly, as the rubber plant really can't handle wet feet.
How do I get beautiful, glossy leaves?
The large leaves of the Ficus Elastica Robusta easily collect dust, which makes them look dull. Wipe them regularly with a damp cloth, this keeps the stomata clear and instantly gives your plant that fresh-from-the-grower shine again.
Use lukewarm water without soap or leaf shine products, as these can actually damage the leaves. Do this every two to four weeks and your Ficus will look picture-perfect.
Why is my rubber plant dropping leaves?
Leaf drop in the Ficus Elastica Robusta is usually caused by too much or too little water, draughts, or a sudden change in location. A cold shock, for example near a window or door in winter, can also throw the plant off balance.
Place your plant in a fixed, draught-free spot and check your watering routine first before changing anything else. The plant usually recovers on its own once conditions stabilise again.
Can my Ficus Elastica Robusta sit in direct sunlight?
Better not to. The rubber plant loves plenty of light, but harsh, direct sun can scorch the leaves, you'll notice this as pale, burnt patches.
Choose a spot with lots of indirect light, for example a few metres from a south-facing window or right in front of an east- or west-facing window. This way your Ficus keeps growing strong without any damage.
How do I safely prune my Ficus Elastica Robusta?
Prune your rubber plant in spring or summer, when it's actively growing and heals faster. Cut with clean, sharp scissors just above a leaf or bud.
Note: pruning releases a white, sticky plant sap that can irritate the skin. Wear gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, and keep the plant away from children and pets while pruning.
Is the Ficus Elastica Robusta toxic to pets?
Yes, the rubber plant is mildly toxic if ingested. The milky white sap can cause vomiting, drooling or an irritated mouth and stomach in dogs and cats.
So keep your plant out of reach of curious noses, and if in doubt after ingestion, contact your vet.
How do I propagate my rubber plant using cuttings?
The easiest way to propagate a rubber plant is with a stem cutting of 10-15 cm with at least one leaf. Cut the stem at an angle and dab away the sap with a cloth before placing it in water or moist potting soil.
Provide a warm, bright spot without direct sunlight. After a few weeks you'll see the first roots appear, and you can repot the young plant into a pot with good drainage.
