Lemon Trees
With a lemon tree, you instantly add a summer feeling to your garden or terrace! Take a quick look at the Green Bubble range.
Beautiful lemon trees for outdoors
The Citrus Lemon originated in Asia, mainly in countries such as India, Myanmar and China. It later spread to the Mediterranean region, to southern European countries such as Italy and Greece. Today, it is a common tree in warm and tropical regions around the world.
With the beautiful lemon tree you instantly create a summer atmosphere in your garden. The lemon tree is a fragrant fruit tree and is semi-hardy to 0 degrees Celsius. When the temperature drops below this, we recommend wrapping the tree with a special tree cover or plastic.
Extra fun: the lemons that grow on the tree are just edible! So you can use them perfectly in dishes, as a fresh addition to your drink or to make your own limoncello. Just make sure the fruit is well ripe before you pick it.
Different types of lemon trees
At Green Bubble, you'll find a diverse selection of lemon trees in different sizes, so there's a suitable option for every kind of space and need. From a charming lemon tree on rack of 160 cm which is perfect for a small balcony, up to large 260 cm lemon trees that beautifully complement wider gardens or terraces, we have it all.
Is a lemon tree hardy?
A lemon tree is semi-hardy, but does not tolerate prolonged frosts well. In general, a lemon tree can tolerate temperatures up to 0 degrees Celsius. Does the temperature drop below that? Then it is important to protect your tree properly. You can do this by wrapping the tree with a special tree cover or bubble wrap. This prevents the roots or trunk from freezing. Is your lemon tree in a decorative pot? If so, you can also temporarily move it indoors in winter, such as in a barn or greenhouse, as long as it is light and cool there.
How do I care for lemon trees?
The care of a lemon tree is generally simple. Still, it's good to be aware of proper care. Of course, you want to enjoy your summer garden plant as long as possible.
How much water do lemon trees need?
Lemon trees need regular water to stay healthy, especially during hot and dry periods. Make sure the soil is slightly moist, but be careful about over-watering to avoid root rot. It is wise to check the moisture of the soil regularly and water as needed. Make sure the pot or soil in which the tree is growing has good drainage. This allows excess water to drain easily, keeping the roots healthy. Good drainage in the pot means there should be holes at the bottom. Many outdoor pots already include this by default, but if not, you can drill them yourself!
Does a lemon tree need a lot of sun?
The ideal location for a lemon tree is a combination of adequate sunlight and shelter from the wind. Make sure the tree receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Thus, a spot in full sun, such as south-facing, is perfect. In addition, it is important that the tree is protected from strong winds, because the lemon tree can't handle that well.
In summer, the lemon tree feels great on a sunny patio, balcony or in the garden. Therefore, provide enough space for the tree to grow well. Make sure the soil is well-drained, as wet feet can cause root rot.
In winter, of course, the sun in Holland is less powerful and does not shine as long. Is your lemon tree in a pot? Then it is best to move it to a light, sheltered spot during the colder months. Think of a veranda, conservatory or inside near a large window. This keeps the tree protected from frost, but still gets enough light. Do you have the lemon tree in the ground? Then provide extra protection, such as a tree cover, and choose a sheltered spot close to a wall or fence to keep out the cold as much as possible.
Repotting the Citrus Limonia
Is your citrus tree in an ornamental pot in your garden? Then once in a while it is necessary to repot your plant to a larger pot. By repotting your lemon tree to a larger pot you give it a chance to develop further. Start by choosing a new pot that is at least 20% larger than your lemon tree's current pot. Make sure the new pot has enough drainage holes to drain excess water and use quality potting soil that is well-drained. Remove the lemon tree from its current pot and remove any excess soil from the roots. Then place your lemon tree in its new pot and replenish the space around the roots with fresh potting soil. Is your lemon tree in the open ground? Then, of course, repotting is not necessary because the roots can spread freely in the soil.
Does the lemon tree need plant food?
You can feed your lemon tree occasionally to keep it healthy and growing well. Special fertilizers for citrus trees provide the specific nutritional needs of the tree. Follow package instructions for proper dosage. Feed only during the summer months. In the winter months, extra feeding can actually be harmful to the tree!
How should you prune a lemon tree?
Pruning a lemon tree is important for its growth and development. Preferably do this in the spring when the tree can properly repair itself. Remove dead or damaged branches and thin the tree by removing crossing branches. Keep the size of the tree under control, but do not over-prune. Always use a sharp knife or scissors. With regular pruning, your lemon tree will stay healthy and you can enjoy it for a long time to come!
Preventing diseases in lemon trees
It is important to be aware of common lemon tree pests, such as Mealybug. Mealybug is a small, fluffy insect pest that can nestle on the underside of the leaves and along the branches of the tree. They suck the sap from the leaves, which can lead to weakened growth and reduced fruitfulness of the tree. To prevent mealybugs, regular inspection of the tree's leaves and branches is essential. Watch for signs of white, fluffy masses on the plant and for any deformities or yellowing of the leaves. In this case, spray the tree well with water, possibly using a handy plant sprayer. A mild solution of water and soap can be used to manually remove mealybugs from the leaves and branches. It is also important to keep the area around the lemon tree clean and remove any fallen leaves or plant debris, as mealybugs like to nest in dirty, moist conditions.
