Choosing the right pot size for your houseplant

Choosing the right pot size for your houseplant

Have you just bought a beautiful new houseplant or is your green friend outgrowing its size? Then it is probably time to repot your plant. Here, it is important to choose the right pot size for the new ornamental pot! A well-fitting pot is essential for the health and growth of your houseplant. But how do you know exactly what size you should have? And what should you pay attention to? We are happy to explain.

Why is the right pot size important?

Choosing the right pot size is more important than you might think. A pot that is too small can pinch the roots, preventing the plant from absorbing enough nutrients and water. This inhibits growth and can even lead to wilting. On the other hand, a pot that is too big can cause too much soil around the roots. This retains water, which can cause root rot. The plant may also have too much space and be unable to settle. This creates an unstable plant that cannot grow optimally.

What should you pay attention to when choosing the pot size?

The diameter of the ornamental pot

The ornamental pot should always be slightly larger in diameter than the growing pot in which the plant was originally grown. This gives the roots enough room to develop further. A good guideline is:

For smaller plants: Choose an ornamental pot that is 2-5 cm larger in diameter than the growing pot.
For larger plants: Choose an ornamental pot that is 5-10 cm larger than the growing pot.
Example: Do you have a cultivation pot with a diameter of 15 cm? Then choose an ornamental pot of about 17-20 cm in diameter.

Note the inside diameter of the new pot

At Green Bubble, we always mention the inside diameter in the product description of our ornamental pots. This is important, because the inner diameter is the opening in which the root ball from the pot must fit. This inner diameter is often smaller than the total diameter of the ornamental pot because of the thickness of the material.

Tip: Always measure the diameter of the top of your cultivation pot and compare this with the inner diameter of the ornamental pot. That way you can be sure your plant will fit properly!

Height of the pot

Besides the diameter, the height of the pot is also important. The ornamental pot should be high enough to cover the roots, but not too deep, otherwise water will stay at the bottom.

When is it time for a bigger plant pot?

Your houseplant should not be repotted too often, but sometimes it is really necessary. How do you know when it is time for a bigger pot?

Signs that your plant needs a bigger pot:

The roots grow out of the drainage holes or emerge above the pot.
The plant dries out faster than normal because the roots have filled all the soil.
Growth stagnates or the plant produces fewer leaves and flowers.
The growing pot becomes top-heavy and wobbles or falls over.
If you recognise these signs, it's time to choose a bigger pot and repot the plant!
