Trendy Monstera Deliciosa houseplants

The Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Hole Plant, is a fascinating houseplant from the Monstera family for any indoor space. It owes its nickname to the striking holes and crevices in its leaves, which resemble large bites. These unique features give the Monstera Deliciosa its special look that will immediately catch your eye. Whether you are a novice plant lover or an experienced gardener looking for an impressive and easy-to-care-for plant, the Monstera Deliciosa will certainly not disappoint.

How fast does a Monstera Deliciosa grow?

The Monstera Deliciosa is known for its relatively rapid growth. Under ideal conditions, with plenty of bright, indirect light, regular watering, warm temperatures and high humidity, the plant can produce a new leaf every four to six weeks during the growing season. With proper care, a Monstera Deliciosa can grow up to 60 cm per year. In doing so, it is also useful to provide a climbing aid, such as a moss stick. This way you can support its natural climbing behaviour and leaf development.

Is the Monstera Deliciosa air-purifying?

The Monstera Deliciosa is air-purifying. This popular houseplant is known for its ability to purify the air. In addition, the plant helps improve the humidity in your home by evaporating water through its leaves, which can be beneficial for the air quality in your home. This makes the Monstera Deliciosa not only an attractive addition to your interior, but also a healthy choice for a better living environment.

Is the Monstera Deliciosa poisonous?

The Monstera Deliciosa is unfortunately toxic if ingested. The plant contains oxalate crystals that can irritate the digestive system if swallowed. This can lead to symptoms such as mouth and throat irritation, vomiting and sometimes abdominal pain. It is therefore wise to keep poisonous plants out of the reach of children and pets. How do I take care of my Monstera Deliciosa?

The Monstera Deliciosa is not difficult to look after. The plant grows quite quickly and does not need much water. To enjoy your Monstera Deliciosa for a long time, it is important that you know the right care. So read on about taking care of your hole plant.

Watering the Monstera Deliciosa

A Monstera Deliciosa does not need much water, but the soil should always remain slightly moist. Check this carefully every time you want to water the plant, as too much water can be fatal for this houseplant. In summer, the plant usually needs watering once a week; in winter, once every fortnight is usually sufficient. Excess water can accumulate at the roots, leading to root rot. Is your plant repotted? Then we always recommend using a water meter or a moisture meter. A Monstera Deliciosa that has been given too much water can be recognised by brown spots with a yellow edge on the leaves.

Choosing the right location

The Monstera Deliciosa likes to stand in a spot in normal daylight. The plant does not tolerate direct sunlight, which can even burn its leaves. The best position for a Monstera Deliciosa is in daylight with occasional shade.

Feeding the Monstera Deliciosa

In the spring and summer months, you can give the Monstera Deliciosa extra nutrients, with normal houseplant food being sufficient. During the winter months, however, this is not necessary because the Monstera Deliciosa, like many other plants, is in a dormant period. During this time, administering nutrition can even be harmful.

Pruning and cutting the Monstera Deliciosa

You can prune the Monstera Deliciosa when a leaf has become old and unattractive, or when the plant is growing out of proportion. To do this, use a sharp knife or a sharp pair of string shears and cut off the leaves as close to the moss stick as possible. Be careful not to remove too many leaves, as that would be a waste!
If you like, you can also take cuttings from the Monstera to create new plants. Select a healthy side branch with an aerial root and cut it off just below a node. Place the cutting in water or directly in moist potting soil. Keep the cutting warm and moist and wait for new roots and leaves to appear before repotting.

Repotting the hole plant

You can repot the Monstera Deliciosa as soon as it grows out of its growing pot. When selecting a new pot, choose one that is at least 20% larger than the old one so that the roots have enough room to grow. The best time to repot the Monstera Deliciosa is in spring, so that the plant can nestle and recover optimally. We recommend doing this with the help of a waterproof inner cover, filling castrat and a water gauge or moisture meter.

Troubleshooting the Monstera Deliciosa

Is your Monstera Deliciosa sick? Unfortunately, this can always happen to a living plant. Fortunately, pests are often easy to control if you act quickly to limit the damage. It is important to recognise the symptoms early and take immediate action. You can recognise pests, for example, by small webs and dots on the leaves in the case of spider mites.
