Mediterranean Olive Trees

Olea olive trees originate in the sun-drenched countries around the Mediterranean Sea, where they grow under the hot sun and Mediterranean climate. Their years of growth have made these trees a symbol of fertility and timeless style for centuries. Olive trees are beautiful outdoor plants that have effortlessly adapted to the Dutch climate. They are very hardy, some varieties down to -17 degrees Celsius! So there is no need to move this plant in winter.

Are olive trees hardy?

The olive tree is hardy for Dutch winters. Some trees even thrive at temperatures as low as -17 degrees Celsius. If the frost persists, we do recommend protecting your tree with a tree cover or bubble wrap. This prevents the soil from freezing or the trunk from being damaged. Make sure to air the tree regularly to prevent mould growth.

How big does an olive tree grow?

This sturdy tree has a majestic appearance and adds a touch of Mediterranean charm to any environment. But how big does it actually grow? The size of an olive tree varies depending on several factors, including the species, growing conditions and the age of the tree. In general, the olive tree is a slow grower that will last for decades if you take good care of it.
If your olive tree is in a pot, it often remains modest and grows into a charming medium-sized tree. Perfect for your terrace or balcony. Do you want your olive tree to grow and have the space for a large tree? Then it is better to place your tree in the ground. This way, the roots can spread out and the tree has a chance to grow further.

Where do olive trees come from?

We gave it away a bit earlier, but the beautiful olive trees originate from the warm regions around the Mediterranean Sea. Greece, Italy and Spain to be precise.

Different types of olive trees

Olive tree Olea Lorc

Olive tree Olea Europaea Cultivo

We already knew that the olive tree can survive for a very long time. The Cultivo olive tree lives upto that. This tree is a real asset to your garden. With its beautiful leaves, it steals the show.

How do you take care of an olive tree?

500 years... That's how old the olive tree can get. But then you have to take good care of the garden plant, of course. Make sure you know the right care tips to enjoy this beautiful tree for as long as possible.

Watering the olive tree

The Olea needs a lot of water. Especially in summer, when the tree is showing off in the sun, it should be watered weekly. Sometimes even a couple of times a week. In winter, the amount will be considerably less. With the rainwater the plant receives during this period, it needs less extra moisture. In any case, always keep the soil slightly moist. Have you planted the tree in full soil? Then good drainage is essential. This will prevent excess water from accumulating and damaging the roots.

What is the best location for an olive tree?

Because of its origins, the Olea is undoubtedly a real sun worshipper. This beautiful tree loves to be in the sun all day. Give it a prominent spot in the garden where it can fully enjoy the bright sunshine.

Pruning an olive tree

Pruning an olive tree may seem complicated, but with a little attention you can keep your tree healthy and beautiful. The best time to prune is in spring, just before growth begins.
Look at the branches of your olive tree and remove the dead or damaged ones. If branches get in each other's way, you can also remove a few. This will allow more sunlight to reach it. Be careful not to prune too much. Especially when the tree is older.

Olive tree diseases and pests

Like any plant, an olive tree is susceptible to pests. After all, the olive tree stands in a living and thriving garden. By watering the tree regularly, you reduce the chances of pests and unwanted insects. If you do get pests, it is a good idea to control them in time. Remove affected branches to prevent them from spreading.
