Stylish Pachira Aquatica plants

The Pachira Aquatica is a beautiful houseplant native to the swamps of South America. The Pachira has since found its way to almost all continents. This impressive houseplant is wildly popular and is known in Asia as a magnet for happiness and wealth. For this reason, the Pachira is also called the ‘Money Tree’ or ‘Money Tree’. The leaves of the Pachira Aquatica resemble hands, which according to tradition can catch money and luck.
The Money Tree is an easy plant to care for indoors and stands out for its unusual, braided trunk. This makes the plant not only low-maintenance, but also a stylish and trendy addition to any interior.

How big can a Pachira Aquatica grow?

It is difficult to predict exactly how big the Pachira Aquatica will grow, as this strongly depends on growing conditions and available space. Under optimal conditions and with proper care, the plant can grow considerably, usually by about 40 cm per year. Each new shoot, which forms a new canopy, will immediately make the plant taller, allowing for rapid growth.

Is the Pachira Aquatica poisonous?

The plant is not poisonous when touched, but the Pachira Aquatica is unfortunately slightly toxic when ingested. So be careful if you have pets or small children. Put the plant in a safe place or consider an animal-friendly houseplant as analternative.

Is the Pachira Aquatica air-purifying?

The Pachira Aquatica, like most houseplants, has air-purifying properties. It helps improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, and can filter harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air. As a result, this sturdy plant contributes to a healthier indoor environment.

Caring for the Pachira Aquatica

The Pachira Aquatica, also known as the Money Tree plant, is a houseplant that is easy to care for, mainly because of its specific water requirements. It needs a good amount of water only once every three weeks. This is because the Pachira Aquatica stores water in its stem. This storage feature creates its own water reservoir with which the plant can supply itself for three weeks. This makes the Pachira Aquatica an ideal choice for people looking for a low-maintenance houseplant.

Watering the Pachira Aquatica

As indicated, the Pachira Aquatica needs a good amount of water once every three weeks. An ideal houseplant for anyone who sometimes forgets or finds it an inconvenient chore. It is also important to water the Money Tree regularly in winter. This is because the humidity in most living rooms is lower then because of the use of heating. Too low humidity can lead to dry leaves and leaf loss. To prevent this, we recommend spraying the Pachira Aquatica lightly with a plant spray once a week. This not only helps to increase humidity, but also removes dust from the leaves and can deter any pests. This combination of regular watering and proper watering not only keeps the plant healthy, but also keeps it beautiful and thriving even during the dry winter months.

Light and location

The Pachira Aquatica prefers a spot with sufficient light and warmth, but avoids direct sunlight. This can be too intense. A north-facing window with indirect sunlight is ideal, where the plant gets 3 to 5 hours of light a day to stay healthy and grow well. If the leaves turn yellow, this may indicate too much light; move the plant to a less brightly lit spot. Do not place the Money Tree plant near a heater, as it gives off dry air. In addition, a draught-free location also reduces the likelihood of pests.

Feeding the Money Tree Plant

The Pachira Aquatica appreciates an occasional boost of plant food, especially during the summer months. Add a capful of plant food to the water when you water the plant. It is important not to give more fertiliser than recommended. During the winter months, we do not recommend giving extra fertiliser as the plant will use less energy and may not absorb the fertiliser properly, which can cause damage to the roots due to the acidic properties of the fertiliser.

Repotting a Money Tree plant

We recommend repotting young Pachira plants annually. For older specimens over 120 centimetres tall, we recommend repotting once every two years. It is important to apply a new top layer of fresh soil every year. Remove the top centimetres of soil and top up the pot with fresh soil.
The best time to repot the Pachira Aquatica is in spring. Any damaged roots then have the best chance to recover. When repotting, choose an ornamental pot that is at least 20% larger than the previous one. Use ordinary, universal potting soil. It is also advisable to use an inner cover to prevent water from standing at the bottom of the pot, which can lead to root rot in the long run.

Fighting diseases and pests

The Pachira Aquatica is generally quite resistant to pests and diseases. However, it is possible that the plant may still suffer from (woolly) lice or spider mites, for example. If you notice this, you can first try gently rinsing the plant with a harder jet of water. If this is not effective, we recommend treating the Money Tree with a suitable chemical or biological pesticide.
