Caring for the Anthurium
Anthuriums are beloved and easy-to-care-for houseplants. It is no surprise that they are so popular in the Netherlands! Make sure you are familiar with the right care tips, so you can enjoy the beauty of your plant for as long as possible!
The Anthurium's water needs
The Anthurium is easy to care for, but it needs regular water to thrive. Make sure the soil always stays moist and does not dry out, especially in the summer months. Water the plant twice a week in summer and once a week in winter. It is better to water small amounts more often than once too much.
Because of its tropical origin, watering the Anthurium in the winter months is beneficial. Indoor humidity is often low in winter, which can hinder the plant's growth. Watering not only increases humidity, but also promotes flower formation and helps keep the plant healthy. When the leaves turn yellow, this may indicate excess water.
What is the best position for the Anthurium?
The Anthurium likes to stand in sufficient daylight, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent damage to the leaves. Too much sunlight causes yellow leaves, while too little sunlight results in green flowers or even no flowering. Preferably place the Anthurium in front of a north-facing window for the best growing conditions. Avoid placing it on top of or near a heater, as this can reduce humidity.
Feeding Anthurium plants?
Immediately after purchase your Anthurium will still have enough nutrients to develop well. After six to eight weeks we advise you to fertilize the Anthurium. Use normal houseplant nutrition for this. Never give the plant more nutrition than stated on the packaging.
It is not necessary to fertilize the Anthurium in autumn and winter, as this can even harm the roots. Also, flower growth will develop better when you do not give the Anthurium extra fertilizer in the winter months.
Repotting the Anthurium
To let your Anthurium grow bigger, it is time for a new pot every two years. Spring is the perfect season for your houseplant to recover optimally from any root damage. When choosing the new planter, it is important that it is about 20 per cent bigger (in diameter) than its predecessor.
Taking Anthurium cuttings and pruning
If you want to propagate the Anthurium, cutting is the simplest method. It is best to use stem cuttings for this process. Remove all petioles from the cuttings without damaging the eyes in the leaf axils. Plant these cuttings upright in a mixture of sand and peat and place them in a warm place, preferably around 25 degrees Celsius. To increase the temperature and humidity, you can wrap a plastic bag around the cuttings. After a few weeks, the stem cuttings will develop roots and leaves will appear. Then it is time to repot the young plants and place them in potting soil.
Fighting diseases and pests
The Anthurium is not specifically sensitive to certain diseases or pests. Should you nevertheless spot bugs, we advise you to treat them as soon as possible with a chemical or biological pesticide. In doubt? Then contact us!
