Product description
The Trachycarpus is known for its kinked leaves and small bumps on the leaf.
This is because these palms grow in the wind on the coast in Spain and snap their leaves for protection. This precaution ensures that the palm does not break off its entire stem with every gust of wind.
The Trachycarpus is an indoor and outdoor plant that originally grows in the Himalayan mountains at high altitudes. The Dutch nickname for Trachycarpus is Henneppalm or Handpalm. It belongs to the Aracaceae family. The Trachycarpus is a well-known houseplant because of its beautiful fan-shaped leaves. The Trachycarpus is a winter-hardy plant that will survive our winters outside just fine!
Care & tips Trachycarpus Fortunei
The Trachycarpus is a real sunbather and needs this light intensity to remain beautiful and healthy. However, this also makes it a very thirsty plant! It is advisable to give the Trachycarpus some extra nutrition in the summer months. This will support its growth and development. Use palm food for this purpose and never give more than the recommended amount.
Water requirements for the Trachycarpus Fortunei
As mentioned, the Trachycarpus is a thirsty houseplant and especially in the summer months it needs some water every day. In summer, the soil absolutely must not dry out, but beware of too much water. When there is too much water, the leaf tips will turn brown or black. When this happens, you can prune the leaves. Then adjust the water quantity by giving a little less. In the winter months, the soil can dry out a little in between waterings. Because less sunlight shines on the plant in the winter months, it will also need less water.
Light requirements for the Trachycarpus Fortunei
The ideal location for the Trachycarpus is in a spot with as much sunlight as possible. Both indoors and outdoors this plant can be placed in full and direct sunlight. Make sure that you choose a spot out of the wind and draught. This will cause the leaves to break down sooner. As stated earlier, the Trachycarpus is hardy, which means that this cool palm will survive temperatures down to -18 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to bring the palm inside or protect it with special winter covers.
Is the Trachycarpus Fortunei a poisonous plant?
No, the Trachycarpus is not poisonous and is therefore animal friendly. However, we do advise against coning the leaves or using them in food.
