How often should I feed my houseplant?

Plant nutrition supports all houseplants to promote growth and development. Plant nutrition actually only applies during the growing seasons, which for most plants is spring and summer. Of course, there are houseplants that grow all year round and thus have no growing seasons. With these plants, you can feed throughout the year. However, feeding is not a must but only a support; too much feeding can be harmful to the plant.

How do you know if your houseplant needs extra nutrition?

As mentioned, feeding is a support, it does not mean that your houseplant needs feeding. You can often tell if your houseplant needs nutrition. A first sign of this is growth. Have you noticed that your houseplant has not grown a whole year? Then it might need some extra nutrition. It could also be that your houseplant is growing but its colour is changing or that leaves are deformed. In an extreme case, the plant might even drop its leaves. The houseplant simply does not have enough energy to develop further. Should you notice these characteristics, first check whether the plant is in the right place and you are giving it the right amount of water. If all this is the case, after some extra feeding, your houseplant will soon steal the show again!

Which plant food should I give?

There are many different types of plant food and they all differ in frequency. There are liquid varieties, sticks and universal plant food. Do you love your plants but are not really into caring? Then we recommend you choose sticks, which you put in the soil and dissolve automatically. No need to look after the plant. Liquid fertiliser is also often chosen. Liquid fertiliser can be adjusted per plant and prevents you from overfeeding.

Too much nutrition

Nutrition is good for a plant but a surplus of nutrition can also make the plant worse off. Food is quite acidic and if too much remains in the soil and is not absorbed, the roots will be damaged.
If you have just repotted your houseplant, there are plenty of nutrients in the soil, so there is no need to give extra nutrition.

How often should I give my houseplant extra nutrition?

The frequency cannot be specified precisely for each plant species, as there are many different plant species and therefore many different kinds of nutrients. In general, feeding once a week is more than enough. Always read the packaging carefully and never give more than is recommended. Furthermore, houseplants should only be fed from March to October.
