How to propagate a Peace Lily?

The peace lily is a true star among houseplants. It's not only easy to care for but also super fun to propagate! Whether you have green fingers or not, this plant has something to offer for everyone. Want to know how to propagate your peace lily the best way? Keep reading!

What do you need to propagate a Peace Lily?

Propagating a peace lily is really not difficult, but there are a few things you’ll need to make it successful:

  1. A healthy peace lily – of course!

  2. Sharp scissors or a knife – to avoid damaging the plant.

  3. Lukewarm water – to place your cutting in.

  4. A clear glass or small container – so you can see the roots grow.

Propagating your Peace Lily: step-by-step guide

Follow this simple guide, and your peace lily will start making its own little offshoots in no time!

1. Choose the right baby plant

Look closely at your peace lily and pick a healthy, small plant attached to one of the stems. Don’t choose one that’s too small, as these don’t have many nutrients and will have a lower chance of surviving.

2. Cut the baby plant off

Once you've chosen the right baby plant, cut it off, making sure to also take a small piece of the stem with it. This will help the cutting develop roots more quickly.

3. Place the cutting in water

Put your cutting into a glass with lukewarm water. Make sure the leaves stay above the water line—if too much leaf is submerged, it can start to rot, and we don’t want that! Using a clear glass is useful so you can see if the roots start to grow.

Caring for your Peace Lily cutting

After a few weeks in water, you’ll notice that the cutting begins to form roots. Once the roots are about 3 to 4 cm long, you can transfer the cutting to a pot with potting soil. Make sure the soil stays moist but not soggy.

Tip: Want to keep your cutting entirely water-based? You can also let your peace lily grow perfectly well in water. Just choose a nice glass or pot with water, and you’ve got yourself a “water peace lily”!

An alternative method: propagating by dividing the plant

There’s another way to propagate your peace lily: by dividing the plant. This method is quicker but a little more invasive for the plant. Instead of taking a cutting, you simply divide the larger plant into two.

Note: Only divide if the plant is strong and healthy. Remove the peace lily from its pot and carefully split the root ball in half. Be careful not to break too many leaves. Place each half into a separate pot, and voilà—you now have two peace lilies!

Get started!

Propagating is an easy and fun way to expand your peace lily collection, whether you choose the water method or the dividing technique. Before you know it, you’ll have a few new peace lilies to give away to friends or to decorate your own home. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your scissors and get propagating!
