Product Description
The Fargesia Nitida is a graceful bamboo that does not spread. This variety is clump-forming and grows neatly in a compact clump. So you do not need a root barrier. The narrow, fresh green leaves sway in the slightest breeze, and the dark canes create a lovely contrast. With this single plant of 170 cm you bring a calm, oriental look to your garden.
This Fargesia looks lovely next to a pond or by a seating area. In a border it goes well with ornamental grasses and ferns. It can also go in a large pot on the patio or balcony. In that case, choose a roomy, sturdy container from our outdoor pots and baskets. If you want to plant a whole hedge, there are also value packs with 5 or 10 Fargesia Nitida plants. You will find more varieties in our bamboo collection.
Care and tips for the Fargesia Nitida bamboo - 170 cm
The Fargesia Nitida is hardy down to about -25 °C and easy to look after, so it can stay outside all year round. Plant it in humus-rich, moisture-retaining soil and mix some compost into the ground. Make the planting hole at least twice as wide as the root ball, set the plant at the same depth as it was in the nursery pot and firm the soil well. If it's going in a pot, make sure there are drainage holes and a layer of gravel so excess water can drain away.
During the growing season, bamboo is quite a hungry plant. In spring, give it an organic fertiliser such as Pokon Organic Garden Fertiliser for healthy foliage and new canes. Also in spring, cut old or damaged canes back to ground level to keep the plant fresh and full. In frosty weather the leaves may curl up a little; that's a natural form of protection and nothing to worry about.
Water needs of the Fargesia Nitida bamboo - 170 cm
Bamboo prefers soil that stays slightly moist, but doesn't like standing with its feet in water. In summer, water about twice a week, and more often in hot, dry weather. Curling leaves are a sign of thirst. Regular watering is extra important in the first year after planting, and a plant in a pot dries out faster than one in open ground. In winter it needs very little water.
Light needs of the Fargesia Nitida bamboo - 170 cm
The Fargesia Nitida is happiest in partial shade. In a spot with harsh midday sun the leaves can start to curl, while morning or evening sun is perfectly fine. A spot sheltered from cold wind is ideal, for example against a fence or among other outdoor plants.
Is the Fargesia Nitida bamboo - 170 cm toxic?
Good news: the Fargesia Nitida is not toxic, which makes it pet-friendly. A safe choice for gardens with children and pets.
