The Trachycarpus palm is known for its kinked leaves and uneven edges, which come from the windy conditions along the Spanish coast. That's a safety measure: it protects the palm against strong winds, so it keeps its stems.
Originally from the Himalayas, the Trachycarpus is a hardy plant that copes well with our outdoor weather. In the Netherlands it's also called the hemp palm or hand palm, and it belongs to the Arecaceae family.

The Trachycarpus is a sun worshipper that needs plenty of light to stay healthy, which also makes it a thirsty plant. In the summer months you can encourage its growth with extra plant food. Use a palm food and always stick to the recommended amount.

The Trachycarpus is a thirsty plant, especially in summer, and needs water every day. Don't let the soil dry out, but take care not to give too much either. Too much water can cause brown or black leaf tips; if that happens, cut back on the watering. In winter the soil can dry out a little between waterings, as the palm uses less water with so little sunlight.

The Trachycarpus needs the most sun of all and can stand outdoors in direct sunlight. Choose a spot out of the wind and draughts to keep the leaves from being damaged. This hardy palm survives temperatures down to -18°C, but in cold like that we recommend bringing it inside or protecting it with a winter cover
