The Trachycarpus is known for its kinked leaves and the small imperfections on them. These palms grow in the wind on the Spanish coast and kink their own leaves for protection. That precaution stops the palm losing a whole leaf stalk with every gust of wind.

The Trachycarpus is a striking outdoor plant that grows high up in the Himalayas in the wild. Its Dutch nicknames are the Henneppalm and the Handpalm, and it belongs to the Aracaceae family. The Trachycarpus is a well-known garden plant thanks to its gorgeous fan-shaped leaves. It is a hardy palm that will come through our winters outdoors without any trouble!

The Trachycarpus is a real sun worshipper and needs that light intensity to stay healthy and good-looking. It does make it a thirsty plant! Giving the Trachycarpus a little extra plant food over the summer months pays off, because it supports its growth and development. Use a palm food and never give more than the recommended amount.

How much water does the Trachycarpus - 120 cm need?

The Trachycarpus is a thirsty garden plant that needs water daily, especially in summer. Make sure the soil does not dry out, but avoid giving too much water as well. An excess of water can turn the leaf tips brown or black. If that happens, prune the affected leaves and cut back on the watering.

In winter the soil can dry out a little between waterings. Because the plant gets less sunlight in this period, it needs less water too. Adjust your watering accordingly to keep the Trachycarpus healthy.

Yes, the Trachycarpus Fortunei (Chinese windmill palm) is one of the hardiest palms available. When planted in the ground, it withstands temperatures down to around -15°C. During prolonged severe frost or biting wind, it's wise to loosely tie the crown together and wrap it in fleece (never use plastic). Is your palm in a pot? Then also protect the pot itself with bubble wrap, so the root ball doesn't freeze through completely.

How much water does the Trachycarpus Fortunei need?

During the growing season (March to October), water the Trachycarpus Fortunei regularly, as soon as the top layer of soil feels dry. The core of the soil can stay lightly moist, but avoid standing water: soggy roots quickly lead to root rot. In winter, the palm needs much less water. A palm in a pot dries out faster than one planted in the ground, so it needs checking more often.

Why does my Trachycarpus Fortunei get brown leaf tips?
