Product Description

The Allium bulbs Mount Everest are bulbs of a white ornamental onion with large, globe-shaped flower heads on long stems. The plant grows to about 100 to 120 centimetres tall and so rises above most perennials. Mount Everest needs little maintenance, and thanks to its long stems it is also a strong cut flower.

These are large bulbs in size 16/18, each producing one substantial flower head. They look their best in the border among perennials or in a large tub on the patio. With 3 bulbs you create a striking group in the border or fill a tub of about 50 centimetres. With 6 or 12 bulbs you bring a rhythm of white globes into a longer border, and with 24 bulbs you plant a large bed or a whole strip; allow 3 to 5 bulbs per square metre. They look lovely next to purple allium bulbs that flower in the same period. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Allium bulbs Mount Everest?

Plant the Allium bulbs Mount Everest between mid-October and the end of November. The soil is then usually colder than 10 °C, so the bulbs root calmly without sprouting prematurely. If the weather stays mild, you can plant into December, as long as the ground is not frozen. The bulbs need a cold winter in the ground to form a flower stem, so we do not recommend planting in spring.

When do the Allium bulbs Mount Everest flower?

The Allium bulbs Mount Everest flower in May and June. First a sturdy bud appears, which bursts open into a white globe. Each flower head is at its best for about three weeks, and the seed heads that remain afterwards give the border structure for weeks. In a tub in a sheltered, warm spot you often see the first flowers a little earlier; a cold spring delays flowering somewhat. Year after year the bulbs return.

Care and tips Allium bulbs Mount Everest

Large bulbs go deeper into the ground: plant them pointed end up at a depth of 15 to 20 centimetres, about three times the bulb height, and 30 to 40 centimetres apart. Light, well-drained soil prevents rot; in wet spots, work some coarse sand or gravel into the soil. For a tub, choose a roomy model with a drainage hole and first put a layer of clay pebbles in the bottom; have a look at our outdoor pots and baskets. The strap-shaped leaves often wither around flowering time. Still leave them until they are completely yellow so the bulb can recharge, and hide them behind perennials. Feed in spring with a little bulb fertiliser; no further maintenance is needed.

Water needs of the Allium bulbs Mount Everest

Mount Everest is economical with water. In the garden, rainwater is usually enough; only during a long dry spring should you give a generous watering now and then. In a tub the soil dries out faster, so water there about weekly from the moment the leaves appear. Make sure excess water can drain away, because wet feet are the biggest risk for the bulbs.

Light needs of the Allium bulbs Mount Everest

A spot in full sun is ideal. There the long stems grow straight up and stay strong enough to carry the heavy flower heads. In a spot with less sun the flowers become smaller and the stems may start to lean.

Are the Allium bulbs Mount Everest toxic?

The Allium bulbs Mount Everest are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb itself. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so garden gloves are handy when planting.

How will my Allium bulbs Mount Everest be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
