Product Description
The Freesia bulbs Double mix are corms of freesias with full, double flowers in a mixture of colours. Along each arching stem the flowers open one by one, with a sweet fragrance. The plants grow to around 40 to 50 centimetres tall. Freesias are among the best cut flowers: in a vase the sprays often last more than a week.
The corms are size 5/+ and each produce one or more flowering stems. They look lovely in a pot or planter on a sunny patio, or in a row in the border for cutting. With 40 corms you fill a few roomy pots or a balcony box, with 80 a spot in the border. With 160 or 320 corms you plant a cutting bed or a long strip; allow 50 to 70 per square metre. Combine them with other flower bulbs that you plant in spring. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Freesia bulbs Double mix?
Freesias are not hardy, so you plant them in spring. Plant the Freesia bulbs Double mix outdoors from mid-April to the end of May, once the night frosts are over. Soak the corms in lukewarm water for a few hours beforehand so they start growing faster. For earlier flowers, start them in pots in March in a light, frost-free spot and move them outside after mid-May.
When do the Freesia bulbs Double mix flower?
The Freesia bulbs Double mix flower from June through August, about three to four months after planting. The buds on each stem open one after another, so a single spray flowers for around two to three weeks. Started early in a pot they flower sooner, after a cool spring later. As they do not survive the winter outdoors, they will not return on their own.
Care and tips Freesia bulbs Double mix
Plant the corms pointed end up, about 5 centimetres deep, two to three times their height, and 5 to 8 centimetres apart. They grow best in light, humus-rich soil that drains well. A pot needs holes in the bottom and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles; you will find a suitable size among our outdoor pots and baskets. Support the thin stems with small canes or netting, as the double flowers are heavy. Remove spent sprays. From the first buds, give some liquid flower fertiliser every two weeks. If you want to keep them, lift the corms in autumn and store them dry and frost-free.
Water needs of the Freesia bulbs Double mix
After planting, water well once and then sparingly until the first leaves appear. Growing and flowering freesias like soil that stays evenly slightly moist; in warm weather water two to three times a week. Never let the soil stay wet for long, or the corms will rot.
Light needs of the Freesia bulbs Double mix
Give the Freesia bulbs Double mix a sunny spot with at least six hours of direct light a day. Full sun means sturdy stems, plenty of buds and the strongest scent. Ideally choose a place sheltered from the wind.
Are the Freesia bulbs Double mix toxic?
The Freesia bulbs Double mix are not toxic to people or animals, which makes them a safe choice. Still keep them out of reach of pets and young children, as eating corms or leaves can upset a sensitive stomach.
How will my Freesia bulbs Double mix be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
