Originally from dry areas, the Yucca Rostrata does not like too much water. This plant needs very little water, as it is a slow grower. However, it is important to check the soil weekly and make sure it does not dry out completely.

The Yucca Rostrata likes sun and tolerates direct sunlight well. Move the plant as little as possible, as it needs to get used to a new spot, which can disrupt its growth. Is the Yucca Rostrata winter-hardy?

Yes, the Yucca Rostrata is known as one of the most winter-hardy yuccas and, in well-draining soil, tolerates temperatures down to around -20°C. It's not the cold itself but the combination of frost and a wet crown that's dangerous. During prolonged hard frost or continuous rain, loosely cover the crown with garden fleece or jute (never plastic) and remove it again as soon as the sun comes out, so mould can't develop.

How much water does the Yucca Rostrata need?

Very little. During the growing season (April to September), water only once the top 5 to 10 centimetres of soil feel completely dry, which in a hot summer works out to about once a week. In winter, water needs are minimal to none: once a month is often enough, and only if the soil is bone dry. Overwatering is the number one cause of death for this plant.

Is the Yucca Rostrata toxic to pets?

Yes, the Yucca Rostrata is toxic if ingested, for both people and pets. The plant contains saponins that can cause stomach and intestinal upset, and the stiff leaf tips are also sharp. Do you have pets or young children in the garden? Place the plant a safe distance from walkways and play areas.

Can I keep the Yucca Rostrata in a pot?

Yes, that works very well, as long as the pot has enough drainage holes. A terracotta pot is preferable because the walls breathe and help the soil dry out faster. Add a layer of clay pebbles or vulcastrat to the bottom for extra drainage, and wrap the pot in bubble wrap during winter so the root ball doesn't freeze through completely.

Why does my Yucca Rostrata have brown or yellow leaves?

A brown or yellow edge on the lowest, oldest leaves is a natural ageing process and no cause for concern. Does the whole crown turn yellow, or does the base of the trunk feel soft? That's usually a sign of overwatering or poorly draining soil, which can lead to root or crown rot. If so, stop watering immediately and improve the drainage.

How fast does a Yucca Rostrata grow and how tall does it get?

The Yucca Rostrata is a very slow grower: the trunk usually gains only a few centimetres a year. Eventually the plant can reach 3 to 4 metres tall, but that can take decades. This slow growth also makes it well suited to long-term life in a pot.

Do I need to prune my Yucca Rostrata?

Pruning isn't necessary. You can remove fully brown or dried-out leaves at the bottom of the crown for a tidier look, which can be done year-round but is best done in spring. Use clean, sharp scissors and cut as close to the trunk as possible. You can also leave the dead leaves hanging as a natural 'skirt' around the trunk.
