The Ficus Elastica Tineke, better known as the Indian rubber tree, is a striking houseplant with an interesting past. Right into the 20th century it was used as an important source for rubber production. The Tineke is a variegated member of the large Ficus family, which counts more than 1,000 species, often so different from one another that you'd never guess they were related. Most Ficus species have their origins in tropical Asia, where they grow into impressive trees.

The Ficus Tineke is an easy houseplant to look after, though it can be a little sensitive to changes in its surroundings. Is the plant growing lopsided to one side? Then don't turn it all in one go, but a small amount every day so it can adjust gently, because big changes can make it drop leaves. Misting it once a week helps keep the foliage healthy and dust-free, and stops pests from moving in.
