Care & tips for the Ficus Lyrata
Happily, the Ficus Lyrata isn't a difficult plant to care for. The Ficus is sensitive to a new environment, though, so we'd recommend not moving it around too often. Is the plant growing to one side? Turn it a little each day without moving it. That way the Ficus gets an even amount of light on its leaves all round. In the summer months you can give the Ficus some extra plant food for a few extra nutrients.
How much water does the Ficus Lyrata need?
The soil of the Ficus Lyrata can stay lightly moist at all times. In the beginning we'd recommend giving the plant small amounts of water several times rather than one big drink. That way it isn't swamped with more water than it can take up. In summer the plant usually needs more water, because it uses up more moisture too. The Ficus will appreciate a regular misting of its leaves as well. Has your plant been repotted? Then always use a moisture meter!
How much light does the Ficus Lyrata need?
The Ficus Lyrata loves a good dose of sunlight. In fact it needs it to stay beautiful and healthy. Put the plant as close to a window as you can. If the Ficus is growing little new foliage, that's often a sign it isn't getting enough sun.
Is the Ficus Lyrata toxic?
Unfortunately the Ficus Lyrata is toxic if swallowed. The sap in the stems also causes skin irritation. So do be careful if you have children or pets.
