Put it in a plant pot that's far too small and, over time, it can run into problems and die.
Your houseplant's roots need enough space. You've just read about the risk you run when you put your houseplant in a plant pot or basket that's too small: your houseplant gets into difficulty and can't take up enough water. Your houseplant will let you know when it's struggling; you can tell by the leaves. If you don't catch it in time, your houseplant will die, and that's the last thing you want.
