Where does the Anthurium come from?

The Anthurium belongs to the arum family and comes originally from the lush rainforests of South America, in countries such as Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. Thanks to that natural rainforest habitat, the plant is used to warmth and high humidity.

Is the Anthurium pet-friendly?

Sadly the Anthurium is toxic if eaten, so do take care if you have small children or hungry pets. We'd recommend giving this houseplant a spot where it stands safely out of reach. If something does go wrong, it's important to consult a doctor quickly.

Can the Anthurium flower?

With the right care and regular feeding, the Anthurium can flower all year round. Imagine enjoying beautiful flowers every day of the year! We do want to stress that these are living products and we can never give guarantees on that. The flowers of the Anthurium really are special, with their lovely shape and range of colours.

If your Anthurium has glossy leaves and produces new flowers regularly, you know the plant is happy. Sometimes an Anthurium takes a break of a few months after about 3 months of flowering. If that rest period lasts longer than 3 months, your Anthurium may not be entirely happy.

Caring for the Anthurium

Anthuriums are much-loved houseplants and easy to look after. It's no surprise they are so popular in the Netherlands! Make sure you know the right care tips, so you can enjoy your plant's beauty for as long as possible.

The water needs of the Anthurium

The Anthurium is easy to care for, but it needs water regularly to thrive. Keep the soil moist at all times and don't let it dry out, especially in the summer months. Water the plant twice a week in summer and once a week in winter. Small amounts more often is better than one drink too many.

Because of its tropical origins, it helps to mist the Anthurium during the winter months. Indoor humidity is often low in winter, which can hold the plant's growth back. Misting doesn't just raise the humidity, it also encourages flowering and helps keep the plant healthy. Yellowing leaves can be a sign of too much water.

What is the best position for the Anthurium?

The Anthurium likes plenty of daylight, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent damage to the leaves. Too much sun causes yellow leaves, while too little results in green flowers or no flowers at all. Ideally, place the Anthurium in front of a north-facing window for the best growing conditions. Avoid putting it on or near a radiator, because that reduces the humidity.

Feeding Anthurium plants

Straight after you buy it, your Anthurium will still have plenty of nutrients to develop well. After six to eight weeks, though, we'd recommend feeding it. Use ordinary houseplant food, and never give the plant more than the packaging says.

In autumn and winter there's no need to feed the Anthurium, and it can even harm the roots. Flowering will also develop better if you leave the extra plant food alone through the winter months.

Repotting the Anthurium

To help your Anthurium grow larger, it's time for a new pot every two years. Spring is the perfect season for your houseplant to recover fully from any root damage. When you choose the new pot, make sure it is about 20 per cent larger in diameter than its predecessor.

Taking cuttings and pruning the Anthurium

If you want to propagate your Anthurium, cuttings are the simplest method. Stem cuttings work best for this. Remove all the leaf stalks from the cuttings without damaging the eyes in the leaf axils. Plant the cuttings upright in a mix of sand and peat and put them somewhere warm, ideally around 25 degrees Celsius. To raise the temperature and the humidity, you can put a plastic bag over them. After a few weeks the stem cuttings will develop roots and the leaves will appear. Then it's time to pot the young plants on into potting soil.

Tackling diseases and pests

The Anthurium isn't particularly prone to any specific diseases or pests. If you do spot bugs, we'd advise treating them as quickly as possible with a chemical or biological treatment. Not sure? Then contact us!
