Care & tips for the orchid (Phalaenopsis)
Plenty of people think an orchid is hard to look after. Understandable, really: surely a plant this beautiful and this floriferous must need a lot of attention? Happily, it doesn't. Once you've found the right spot, your orchid needs hardly any extra care and you'll enjoy its stunning flowers for months.
How much water does the orchid need?
The orchid is one of the easier houseplants and needs watering only once a week. In summer that's weekly on average, while in winter once every ten to twelve days is enough.
How you water an orchid is a little different from what you may be used to, though. The best approach is to lift the whole root ball out of the pot and stand it in a bowl of water. Leave it there for about ten minutes so it can drink properly, then let it drain thoroughly. That stops water sitting in the bottom of the pot, which can cause root rot, and nobody wants that.
How much light does the orchid need?
This beautiful houseplant needs a spot with plenty of bright indirect light; a north-east facing windowsill would be ideal. Keep your orchid out of direct sunlight, because that will scorch the leaves.
Is the orchid a toxic houseplant?
This lovely plant is not toxic, so it's a fine choice alongside children and pets.
The flowering of an orchid
The Phalaenopsis orchid is a houseplant that flowers up to three times a year, with each flush lasting between 2 and 6 months. That means you can enjoy its beautiful blooms all year round. You don't need to cut the orchid's stems back to get it to flower again. If the stems do get too long, simply cut them and put the flowers in a small vase for a little extra atmosphere at home.
