Product Description

The Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix are bulbs of the garden hyacinth in a blend of soft pastel shades. Each bulb forms a dense spike of star-shaped bells on a short, sturdy stem of around 20 to 25 centimetres. Hyacinths are known for their sweet, powerful scent, which you notice from a distance.

The bulbs are size 14/15, good for heavy flower spikes. They suit the border, the edge of a path, window boxes and decorative pots by the front door, where you enjoy the scent most. With 10 bulbs you fill a pot of about 30 centimetres or a window box, with 20 bulbs a spot at the front of the border. With 40 or 80 bulbs you can plant a whole bed; allow 30 to 40 bulbs per square metre. They also do well as cut flowers in a vase. To give the soft shades more depth, plant other hyacinth bulbs in a darker colour in between. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix?

Plant the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix between mid-October and the end of November, as soon as the soil temperature has dropped below 10 °C. The bulbs then root before winter, while the leaves only appear afterwards. If it is not yet freezing, you can still plant in December. Hyacinths need a period of cold to flower in March and April, so do not wait until spring.

When do the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix flower?

The Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix flower in March and April. A spike stays beautiful for about two to three weeks. In a pot against a warm wall they often open earlier, after a cold winter and late spring a little later. Hyacinths return every year; from the second year the spikes usually become a little looser and more natural.

Care and tips Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix

Plant the bulbs according to the rule of thumb of two to three times the bulb height, so 10 to 15 centimetres deep, pointed end up and 10 to 15 centimetres apart. Choose airy, well-drained soil. In a pot, put a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom and make sure there is a hole in the base; you will find suitable models among our outdoor pots and baskets. Once flowering is over, cut off the spent spike but leave the foliage until it has turned yellow. A little bulb fertiliser when the leaves appear helps the bulb build strength for next year.

Water needs of the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix

In the garden, rain is usually enough. Only in a dry autumn do you give one generous watering after planting. Bulbs in a pot or window box dry out faster: keep the soil slightly moist from the moment the leaves appear. Wet feet are fatal, so never leave water in the saucer.

Light needs of the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix

Place the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix in full sun. With six hours or more of direct light a day, the stems stay short and sturdy and the spikes colour evenly. A spot in light partial shade also works, but the heavy spikes then bend over more easily.

Are the Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix toxic?

The Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The outer skins of the bulb can make your skin itch, so preferably wear gloves when planting.

How will my Hyacinth bulbs Pastel mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
