Product Description

The Allium bulbs Ping Pong are bulbs of a white ornamental onion with round, compact flower heads reminiscent of ping-pong balls. They stand on slender, sturdy stems and grow to about 60 to 80 centimetres. White goes with almost every colour in the garden, and as a cut flower the little globes last a long time in the vase.

At size 6/7 these are smaller bulbs that you plant in larger numbers. They suit the border, the edge of a path and pots and planters on the patio. With 40 bulbs you fill a few pots or a patch of about one square metre in the border. With 80 bulbs you create a ribbon along the path, and with 160 or 320 bulbs you plant a large bed or scatter them through a long border; allow 30 to 50 bulbs per square metre. For a playful effect, combine them with purple allium bulbs of a different height. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Allium bulbs Ping Pong?

If you want to plant the Allium bulbs Ping Pong, do so from mid-October to the end of November. Around that time the soil has cooled to below 10 °C, the signal for the bulbs to form roots rather than leaves. In a mild winter you can carry on into December, as long as there is no frost in the ground. Do not wait until spring, because the bulbs first need to go through a cold period.

When do the Allium bulbs Ping Pong flower?

The Allium bulbs Ping Pong open in May and June, after the foliage has appeared first in spring. Each flower head stays a fresh white for about three weeks. In a pot on a sunny patio they often flower a little earlier than in the border; after a cold spring, flowering shifts a little later. They come back into flower every year.

Care and tips Allium bulbs Ping Pong

Plant these small bulbs about 8 to 10 centimetres deep, two to three times the bulb height, pointed end up and about 10 centimetres apart. Use well-drained soil and avoid spots where water stands. In a pot a hole in the bottom and a layer of gravel are essential; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable size. After flowering you can leave the faded globes standing or cut them off; leave the foliage until it withers. A small dose of bulb fertiliser in spring keeps the bulbs strong.

Water needs of the Allium bulbs Ping Pong

Ping Pong has moderate water needs. In the garden the bulbs usually manage with rain; only during prolonged drought in spring should you give a little extra. Pots dry out faster: water them about once a week from the first leaves, and first feel whether the top few centimetres are dry. Standing water is fatal, so make sure it can drain away.

Light needs of the Allium bulbs Ping Pong

Choose a sunny spot for this ornamental onion. The more sun, the sturdier the stems and the fuller the flowering. In a shady spot the flower heads stay small and the stems droop.

Are the Allium bulbs Ping Pong toxic?

The Allium bulbs Ping Pong are mildly toxic if ingested, like all ornamental onions. Store and plant them out of reach of pets and young children. Garden gloves prevent the sap from irritating your skin.

How will my Allium bulbs Ping Pong be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
